  • From Mont Viso to Slovakia

Pierre Pétrequin, Michel Errera et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica Academiae…•2011

Two fragments of large jadeitite axeheads were discovered in a Lengyel enclosure at Golianovo (Republic of Slovakia), close to Nitra. Spectroradiometric analysis and macroscopic characteristics indicate that, in all probability, these two artefacts — which are exceptional in this region of Europe — had come from the Neolithic quarries on Mont Viso, in the Italian Alps, some 950 km away as the crow flies. The two axehead fragments from Golianovo pr…

  • Prehistoric transeuropean transport of stone tools

    D Hovorka•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica Academiae…•2010

In presented paper transcontinental transport of stone tools in the Neolithic/Aeneolithic is described. Attention is paid namely on the west-east transport of jadeitite axes from the Piedmont in the Western Alps to Central Europe, and east-west transport of the obsidian implements from Zemplin county (E Slovakia and NE Hungary) to the western part of Germany, as well. In both cases, transport, most probably of ready-made implements on a distance …

  • Older linear till middle danube tumulus culture pottery—Western Slovakia sites

D Hovorka, Zdeněk Farkaš et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica Academiae…•2007

In the paper we present results of multi-analytical study of pottery fragments archaeologically ranked from the Older Linear till the Middle Danube Tumulus Cultures, e.g. originated in the time-span of approximately 4700 years. In the studied set of pottery fragments we didn’t observed substantial differences of the raw materials used and temperatures of firing/annealing comparing studied set through the whole mentioned time-span didn’t surpass 6…

  • Jadeite and eclogite

    Open Access•Ján Spišiak, J n Spi?iak et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2005•Cited by: 3•References: 2

In this paper, we describe Neolithic/Aeneolithic implements made from high-pressure metabasites: jadeites and eclogites. As such rocks are unknown in the Western Carpathians mountain system, we presume distant source areas for the described raw material types. We present the morphology, cultural association, and the results of petrographic research (microprobe analyses of rock-forming minerals) on implements made from these raw materials found at…
