Application of a Hybrid Regression Discontinuity Design to Evaluate the Generality of a Summer School Treatment Effect
This paper demonstrates the application, analysis, and interpretation of a Hybrid Regression Discontinuity (HRD) design. HRD is a combination of a Regression Discontinuity (RD) design and a Randomized Control Trial (RCT). The HRD was implemented in conjunction with a summer literacy program administered by a school district in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. Students scoring below a lower cutoff of 30 words correctly read per minute (WCPM) in the spr…
Reflect, Create, and Teach
Employing an innovative arts-based approach to professional learning, this study examined in-service teachers’ reflective processes, insights, and pedagogic practices through the use of creative thinking journals. Using photovoice methodology, we conducted a thematic analysis of teachers’ journals and individual semi-structured interviews, focusing on how creative thinking journals enhanced reflective practices and teaching efficacy. Our findings…
How are Early Head Start teachers’ professional development experiences associated with their work-related stress and qualities of teacher-child interactions
Do Spanish-English bilingual children outperform monolingual English-speaking children on executive function tasks in early childhood? A propensity score analysis
A Regression Discontinuity Design Framework for Controlling Selection Bias in Evaluations of Differential Item Functioning
Differential item functioning (DIF) is often used to examine validity evidence of alternate form test accommodations. Unfortunately, traditional approaches for evaluating DIF are prone to selection bias. This article proposes a novel DIF framework that capitalizes on regression discontinuity design analysis to control for selection bias. A simulation study was performed to compare the new framework with traditional logistic regression, with respe…
Are translated mathematics items a valid accommodation for dual language learners? Evidence from ECLS-K
Constructing Subscores That Add Validity
Prior research suggests that subscores from a single achievement test seldom add value over a single total score. Such scores typically correspond to subcontent areas in the total content domain, but content subdomains might not provide a sound basis for subscores. Using scores on an inferential reading comprehension test from 625 third, fourth, and fifth graders, two new methods of creating subscores were explored. Three subscores were based on …
