Literary strains of négritude and consciencism in Joseph Brahim Seid
This study introduces Joseph Brahim Seid, one of Africa’s intellectuals of the first generation of independence, in relation to the ideologisation of his contemporaneous counterparts, to Léopold Sédar Senghor’s négritude and Kwame Nkrumah’s consciencism. Two stories from J. B. Seid’s 1962 collection, Au Tchad sous les Etoiles (translated as Told By Starlight in Chad, 2007) are read as envisioning nation and a new multicultural Chadian identity at…

The manuscript had long been housed in the Wits Historical Papers and was accessible only to scholars. D.S. Matjila and Karen Haire have mined the archive to produce the first English translation of Molema’s biography, Lover of His People…

Traditionally, the life of the Batswana is centered on cattle. Right up to the present, cattle feed the creative imagination in proverbs. This study traces the cattle motif in Sol. T. Plaatje’s three most important publications in Engli…

His anthology Sefalana sa Menate (Granary of Niceties) contains 35 poems, and echoes of and allusions to cattle appear in 21 of the poems. The first section of the article demonstrates the relationship between cattle and the Batswana sensibilities, historically and culturally. It shows how a strong identification with cattl…
