  • Teaching the African American Experience

    Open Access•Gregory Shafer•ARTICLE•Journal of Black Studies•2015

In choosing to teach African American literature at my community college, I learned a great deal about a topic for which I thought I was well prepared. As a whole, the semester became a learning experience for the entire class, as we realized that much of the past—its racism and issues of identity—are still lingering with us today and that many of us share a poignant connection to Phillis Wheatley

  • What Does the Arrest and Release of Emile Borel and His Colleagues in 1941 Tell Us about the German Occupation of France

Open Access•Laurent Mazliak, Gregory Shafer et al.•ARTICLE•Science in Context•2011

Argument The Germans occupying Paris arrested Emile Borel and three other members of the Académie des Sciences in October 1941 and released them about five weeks later. Drawing on German and French archives and other sources, we argue that these events illustrate the complexity of the motivations and tactics of the occupiers and the occupied. While Borel and his colleagues were genuine members of the Resistance, and those who arrested them were f…

  • Jeffrey's Rule of Conditioning

    Open Access•Gregory Shafer, Glenn Shafer•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•1981•Cited by: 3•References: 7

Richard Jeffrey's generalization of Bayes' rule of conditioning follows, within the theory of belief functions, from Dempster's rule of combination and the rule of minimal extension. Both Jeffrey's rule and the theory of belief functions can and should be construed constructively, rather than normatively or descriptively. The theory of belief functions gives a more thorough analysis of how beliefs might be constructed than Jeffrey's rule does. Th…
