  • Misrepresenting Domestic Violence Survivors’ Needs Under Bureaucratic Control

    Open Access•Pei-Ru Liao•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2025•References: 5

This article uses Nancy Fraser's theory of social justice to analyze outsourced domestic violence (DV) services in Taiwan. The article is based on interviews with 15 social workers employed in a large NGO across the island. The study reveals how bureaucratic control and quantified work performance metrics compromise service quality and marginalize survivors' needs. Administrative imperatives undermine social workers' efforts to provide customized…

  • Women’s Protection or Patriarchal Control by the State? Institutional Ethnographic Exploration of Domestic Violence Services in Taiwan

    Open Access•Pei-Ru Liao•ARTICLE•Affilia•2025•References: 8

After implementing the Domestic Violence Prevention Act (DVPA) in 1998 in Taiwan, standardized protocols were implemented to provide social services to survivors of domestic violence (DV). This article examines how DV services have become institutionalized in Taiwan through a feminist method of inquiry, Institutional Ethnography (IE). Firstly, through interviews with social workers in the outsourcing organization, the IE journey leads to the way …

  • Only filial piety can produce heirs, not homosexuals!’

    Pei-Ru Liao•ARTICLE•Culture and Religion•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 8

Taiwan became the first Asian country to legalise same-sex marriage in 2019. The call of legalising same-sex marriage began in 2013, along with the emergence of the Christian-led pro-family movement. Religious backlash came to its peak in 2013 and successfully gained politicians’ and public’s support to fight against same-sex marriages and LGBT-inclusive gender equity education. The rhetoric device of the pro-family movement in Taiwan can be conn…

  • Institutionalising gender equity on campuses

    Pei-Ru Liao•ARTICLE•Gender and Education•2019•References: 9

Feminist scholars and activists have been lobbying for legislation against sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in Taiwan since the 1980s, which has resulted in many laws being enacted or modified from the 1990s to the 2000s. The Gender Equity Education Act (GEEA) provides a code of practice to address SGBV on campuses that has been implemented for more than a decade. This study used Institutional Ethnography to explore the ruling relations su…

  • Imagining ‘human Bodhisattva’ via televisual discourse

    Pei-Ru Liao•ARTICLE•Contemporary Buddhism•2013

Seeing the limitation of the thesis of ‘mediatisation of religion’ (Hjarvard 2008; 2011), I would like to present a case study of Buddhist organisational usage of televisual discourse in Taiwan in this article. The example of one of the most watched prime-time docudramas—Da-Ai Drama (produced by an iconic Taiwanese Buddhist organisation, Tzu-Chi)—challenges the limited scope of ‘mediatisation of religion’ and encourages a critical review of the t…
