Gaps in the Implementation of the Non-Prima Facie Refugee Status Determination in Uganda
Refugee status determination is an important initial step in protecting people seeking asylum and in determining who is entitled to international and national protection under refugee law. Refugee status determination gives access to the individuals/groups seeking asylum protection under international or national laws, grants legal certainty, protects them from refoulement and provides a pathway to integration—not just as a humanitarian act but a…
Unhealthy food outlets and outdoor advertisements in urban South African primary school students’ food environments
Children’s exposure to outlets selling, and outdoor advertisements marketing, unhealthy foods is an important risk factor for obesity. Yet few policies address the food retail and/or outdoor advertising environment, and research about children’s perceptions is limited, especially in low- and middle-income countries. We used a participatory, multimodal visual/verbal approach to explore urban-dwelling South African primary school students’ percepti…
Drawings in a “Container”
Drawings can be a useful research tool as they allow children and young people to reflect on their lived experience in a form that is not dependent on words. They can, however, evoke strong memories and cause distress, particularly among children affected by war. This article describes a visual narrative approach where drawings do not exist on their own as a research tool but are embedded in an actual container, like a suitcase, or another artist…
Artbooks as witness of everyday resistance
Artbooks, which are a combined form of picture and story book created using mixed media, can be a simple yet powerful way of supporting children affected by war and displacement to tell their stories. They allow children to work through the creative arts, which protects them from being overwhelmed by difficult memories. They also allow, even very young children, to show us how they cope with past violence and present injustice by recalling and re…
Art-based, narrative research with unaccompanied migrant children living in Johannesburg, South Africa
Migrant children are often represented through stereotypical narratives by media, governments and even researchers. These representations range from institutional narratives that reduce their experience to “pre-flight, flight, post flight” to psychological narratives that can represent them as traumatized victims of war. Using narratives collected over five years with unaccompanied migrant children, this paper shows that their past and present re…
Child participation in research
This article reflects on several challenges that particular cultural, socio-economic and catastrophic factors (such as the HIV epidemic) pose to ethical practice in research involving child participation in a region such as southern Africa. With reference to concrete situations, we discuss research practices in relation to: countering the widespread power disparity between adults and children; ensuring the authenticity of children's evidence; obt…
Developmental vulnerabilities and strengths of children living in child-headed households
This pilot study addresses the need to clarify specific developmental vulnerabilities and strengths that characterise children living in child-headed households in comparison to children living in adult-headed households in equivalent impoverished communities. Samples of 10 each of these two categories of household were randomly selected from impoverished communities around Pietermaritzburg, South Africa (involving a total of 22 children from a c…
