Multimodal pulse oximeters to support the integrated management of childhood illnesses
Nearly 5 million children die each year of preventable causes, with pneumonia being a key contributor. The Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses guidelines improve health care workers’ diagnostic and management capabilities by relying mostly on clinical signs. Though there have been successes, challenges in the consistent application of IMCI and the accurate diagnosis of conditions like hypoxemia remain. Next generation pulse oximeters add…
Predicting the potential impact of scaling up four pneumonia interventions on under-five pneumonia mortality
Background: Pneumonia remains the leading cause of mortality in under-five children outside the neonatal period. Progress has slowed down in the last decade, necessitating increased efforts to scale up effective pneumonia interventions. Methods: We used the Lives Saved Tool (LiST), a modelling software for child mortality in low- and middle-income settings, to prospectively analyse the potential impact of upscaling pneumonia interventions in Bang…
Usability of pulse oximeters used by community health and primary care workers as screening tools for severe illness in children under five in low resource settings
Timely recognition and referral of severely ill children is especially critical in low-resource health systems. Pulse-oximeters can improve health outcomes of children by detecting hypoxaemia, a severity indicator of the most common causes of death in children. Cost-effectiveness of pulse-oximeters has been proven in low-income settings. However, evidence on their usability in community health settings is scarce. This study explores the usability …
Paediatric pneumonia research priorities in the context of Covid-19
Background: Pneumonia remains the leading cause of infectious deaths in children under-five globally. We update the research priorities for childhood pneumonia in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and explore whether previous priorities have been addressed. Methods: We conducted an eDelphi study from November 2019 to June 2021. Experts were invited to take part, targeting balance by: gender, profession, and high (HIC) and low- and middle-incom…
The rusted steel that binds
As many post-industrial cities shift to service and information, manufacturing legacies – material and symbolic – persist in diverse ways. The “Steel City” of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania exemplifies both deindustrial transition to “eds and meds” and vibrant small-scale production. Cultural geographers interpret place-based craft production as neolocalism, while economic geographers emphasize ways craft can be embedded in evolving economic regions. T…
Childhood pneumonia diagnostics
BACKGROUND: Pneumonia heavily contributes to global under-five mortality. Many countries use community case management to detect and treat childhood pneumonia. Community health workers (CHWs) have limited tools to help them assess signs of pneumonia. New respiratory rate (RR) counting devices and pulse oximeters are being considered for this purpose. OBJECTIVE: To explore perspectives of CHWs and national stakeholders regarding the potential usab…
Crowdsourcing a cyclist perspective on suggested recreational paths in real-world networks
Routing and navigation services for leisure activities are conditioned by special needs and trade-offs. The advent of online communities and large crowdsourced datasets offers opportunities to improve the adoption of a user’s perspective in these suggested paths. This paper focuses on achieving two goals. First, the presented methodology analyses a dataset of 190,610 historical GPS traces to gain insights into the appreciation or attractiveness o…
Identifying reliable, valid markers of authorship
In response to Chaski’s article (published in this volume) an examination is made of the methodological understanding necessary to identify dependable markers for forensic (and general) authorship attribution work. This examination concentrates on three methodological areas of concern which researchers intending to identify markers of authorship must address. These areas are sampling linguistic data, establishing the reliability of authorship mar…
