  • Signs of compliance

Open Access•Amber Cowans, Darragh Hare et al.•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2026

Natural landscapes shared by people and wildlife often rely on signage to guide people towards behaviours that protect nature, where the justification and framing of these requests may influence how people interpret and respond to them. We conducted a factorial vignette experiment with 600 frequent outdoor recreationists living in Scotland, stratified by age, gender and dog ownership, to test the influence of specific sign features on recreationi…

  • A process‐based social‐ecological systems framework for studying the effects of human recreation on wildlife

Open Access•Amber Cowans, Darragh Hare et al.•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2026

Understanding the effects of human recreation on wildlife is fundamental for effective management and coexistence, where natural landscapes increasingly serve a dual purpose: protecting biodiversity while providing recreational opportunities. Social‐ecological systems frameworks, which acknowledge the reciprocal links between people and nature, have been proposed as a lens through which to study recreation impacts on ecological systems. However, …

  • A Comparison of Chimpanzee Density Estimators in Southern Congo

Open Access•Enrique VillaMarin, Marc Fourrier et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2026

Chimpanzee populations have declined severely in recent decades because of habitat loss and illegal hunting, emphasizing the need to monitor population density to support conservation. Since 1992, the Jane Goodall Institute has led chimpanzee conservation efforts in the Republic of Congo through the Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center and, more recently, the Tchimpounga Nature Reserve (TNR), in partnership with the Ministry of Forest Eco…

  • Forward guidance and expectation formation

    Open Access•Chris Sutherland, Christopher S Sutherland•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Econometrics•2023

How forward guidance influences expectations is not fully understood. To study this, I construct central bank data that includes forward guidance and its attributes, central bank projections, and quantitative easing, which I combine with survey data. I describe how, when, and where forward guidance has worked. I estimate that forecasters revised their interest rate forecasts in the intended direction by five basis points on average following a fo…

  • Robustness of linear mixed‐effects models to violations of distributional assumptions

Open Access•Holger Schielzeth, Niels J Dingemanse et al.•EDITOR•ARTICLE•Methods in Ecology and Evolution•2020

Linear mixed‐effects models are powerful tools for analysing complex datasets with repeated or clustered observations, a common data structure in ecology and evolution. Mixed‐effects models involve complex fitting procedures and make several assumptions, in particular about the distribution of residual and random effects. Violations of these assumptions are common in real datasets, yet it is not always clear how much these violations matter to ac…

  • Socioeconomic drivers of urban pest prevalence

Open Access•Chris Sutherland, Andrew J Greenlee et al.•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2020

Bed bugs have re‐established themselves as a common household pest in the United States and pose significant public health and economic concerns, particularly in urban areas. Documenting the scale of the bed bug resurgence and identifying the underlying predictors of the spatial patterns of their incidence is challenging, largely because available data come from biased self‐reporting through local government code enforcement. Here, we make use of…

  • Beer Houses

Chris Sutherland, Christopher Sutherland et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Geography•1986•Cited by: 1

Taiwan is undergoing spectacular economic development with facets of Westernization that have strong social and political overtones. The Westernization process includes the introduction of the American "Old West" beer house. These beer houses manifest the cultural stress involved in the transfer of a seemingly simple economic element into a traditionally conservative and stable Oriental society
