Can AI behave ethically during military crises? Preserving human moral agency
This article examines the ethical implications of integrating artificial intelligence-powered decision-support systems (AI-DSS) into strategic decision-making. As AI-DSS enhances battlefield awareness and accelerates operational tempo, it also risks undermining human moral agency through automation bias, anthropomorphism and over-reliance on machine outputs. Focusing on the socio-technical and psychological dimensions of human–AI interaction, the…
The Relationship Between Type of Attorney and Bail Amount Set for Hispanic Defendants
This research empirically examines the difference that type of counsel, public or private, makes in the bail amount set for Hispanic defendants. Data were collected on all felony defendants assigned to the district court in a midwestern county. Specifically, the authors hypothesized that Hispanic defendants who retain the assistance of private counsel will receive lower bail amounts than defendants assigned a court-appointed attorney. Several ind…
Race as a Factor in the Judicial Decision of Bail Amount in a Midwestern Jurisdiction
Data collected on all felony defendants during 1996 from a district court in a Midwestern county were examined for racial differences in the setting of bail. While we hypothesized that African Americans would receive higher bail amounts than whites, we found no independent effect of race on bail amounts either before or after applying controls for legal variables-seriousness of offense and prior arrests-and extralegal variables-sex, age, residenc…
Cancer Screening Practices and Attitudes: Comparison of Low-income Women in Three Ethnic Groups
This study supports other research on the barriers and health belief differences found among ethnic minority women in the USA. Further, these findings suggest that it is not advisable to collapse ethnic groups into general categories such as 'Asian' when planning cancer control strategies, as differences were found by country of origin

New 1:24,000-scale geologic mapping in the Colorado National Monument Quadrangle and adjacent areas, in support of the USGS Western Colorado I-70 Corridor Cooperative Geologic Mapping Project, provides new interpretations of and data for the stratigraphy, structure, geologic hazards in the area from the Colorado River in Grand Valley onto the Uncompahgre Plateau. The plateau drops abruptly along northwest-trending structures toward the northeast …

The Impact of Religiosity on Political Participation and Membership in Voluntary Associations Among Black and White Americans
While a number of factors have been shown to help predict political participation among Black and White Americans, to date the role of religiosity in relation to that participation has been largely unexamined by researchers. For Americans in general, denominational affiliation has been found to relate to party identification and to the probability of voting. But, the impact of religiosity-commitment to religion-has received little attention. Also…
