The Lexicographic Process Revisited
Lexicographic practice is changing and so is the lexicographic process. This article therefore reconsiders the lexicographic process and takes into account the development towards centralised lexicographical databases which can be observed at lexicographic institutions and dictionary publishing houses in the last couple of years. We discuss how this affects the lexicographic process and its phases and how the process could be further changed by t…
DiBiMT
Despite the remarkable progress made in the field of Machine Translation (MT), current systems still struggle when translating ambiguous words, especially when these express infrequent meanings. In order to investigate and analyze the impact of lexical ambiguity on automatic translations, several tasks and evaluation benchmarks have been proposed over the course of the last few years. However, work in this research direction suffers from critical…
A Lexicographic Practice Map of Europe
This article presents the combined results of three international surveys that were carried out in the context of the Horizon 2020 European Lexicographic Infrastructure project (ELEXIS). The aim of these surveys was to gain more insight into lexicographic practices and the needs of lexicographers in Europe. The surveys were delivered via online platforms. Based on the combined results, we sketch a map of lexicographic practices in Europe, both fo…
Identification and automatic extraction of good dictionary examples
Examples have always been an important part of a dictionary entry. As Rundell and Atkins (2008: 454) point out, ‘you sometimes find that an entry is almost incomprehensible without its examples.’ This argument is strengthened by the recent findings of Frankenberg-Garcia (2012, 2014) that several corpus examples can sometimes be even more useful than the definition. Selecting examples is a great challenge to lexicographers, not only because they n…
The Image of the Monolingual Dictionary Across Europe. Results of the European Survey of Dictionary use and Culture
The article presents the results of a survey on dictionary use in Europe, focusing on general monolingual dictionaries. The survey is the broadest survey of dictionary use to date, covering close to 10,000 dictionary users (and non-users) in nearly thirty countries. Our survey covers varied user groups, going beyond the students and translators who have tended to dominate such studies thus far. The survey was delivered via an online survey platfo…
Dennis Spohr, Towards a Multifunctional Lexical Resource
This book is an updated version of Spohr’s PhD thesis, which he completed in 2010 at the University of Stuttgart. The central objectives of this study are to design and implement a formal model for a multifunctional lexical resource (MLR) that is capable of satisfying the needs of different users in different communicative situations, as well as to provide the mechanisms that are necessary in order to serve different NLP applications. This is an …
The alignment of form and function
This paper analyses constraints on inflectional syncretism and inflectional allomorphy using frequency information. Syncretism arises where one form is associated with more than one function, whereas inflectional allomorphy occurs where there is more than one inflectional class, and a single function is associated with two or more forms. If high frequency is associated with more differentiation on both sides, we expect, on the one hand, that a fr…
