Family Conflict over Political Issues in Hong Kong and its Psychological Consequences: A Longitudinal Study
Politics-related tension has been affecting many families worldwide, and Hong Kong is no exception. Given the lack of scientific research on such a topic, we aimed to advance understanding on the roles of family conflict over political issues by examining our proposed model of parent-child political value discrepancies—family conflict—family relationships. From 2018 June to 2019 May (right before the social movement in the summer of 2019), we suc…
Examining the Factorial Validity of the Entrepreneurial Career Motives Scale: A Five-Nation Comparison
This study validates Shane et al.’s Entrepreneurial Career Motives Scale across nations. A total sample of 948 undergraduate and postgraduate students from five nations (China = 229, Hong Kong = 213, Holland = 136, United States = 155, and Ghana = 215) were recruited to complete a survey designed to measure their entrepreneurial motives and other related constructs. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the hypothesized four-factor structure, na…
Chinese Employees’ Psychological Responses to Abusive Supervisors: The Roles of Gender and Self-Esteem
Drawing on the conservation of resources theory, the relations between abusive supervision and emotional exhaustion and intent to leave were examined, as well as the gender differences in these relations. Moreover, the moderating effect of self-esteem was tested in an integrated model stipulating that the gender-moderating effect was mediated by the abusive supervision × self-esteem interaction. Data were collected from 264 employees (111 men; M …

Cultural Differences in Attitudes Toward Action and Inaction: The Role of Dialecticism
The current research examined whether nations differ in their attitudes toward action and inaction. It was anticipated that members of dialectical East Asian societies would show a positive association in their attitudes toward action/inaction. However, members of non-dialectical European-American societies were expected to show a negative association in their attitudes toward action/inaction. Young adults in 19 nations completed measures of dial…
Positive Effect of Social Work—Related Values on Work Outcomes: The Moderating Role of Age and Work Situation
Part 1 revealed that age moderated the effect of social work-related values on job performance through job satisfaction, with a stronger positive effect in older workers than in younger workers. Part 2 demonstrated that the moderating effect of age shown in Part 1 also varied across work situations. In particular, holding momentary social work-related values was beneficial to the task performance of older workers, and the effect was significantly…
How anxious and avoidant attachment affect romantic relationship quality differently: A meta‐analytic review
Adult attachment has been studied as an important predictor of romantic relationship quality in many empirical studies. This meta‐analysis quantitatively summarized the associations between the two insecure adult attachment dimensions, anxiety and avoidance, and cognitive, emotional, and behavioral indicators of romantic relationship quality based on 73 previous studies with 118 independent samples of 21 602 individuals. More importantly, we exam…

Self‐esteem as a source of evaluative conditioning
This study was designed to examine whether self‐esteem can be used as a source of evaluative conditioning, and whether implicit or explicit self‐esteem was more predictive of the evaluative conditioning effect. Moreover, the role of contingency awareness in the acquisition of the evaluative conditioning effect was also examined. Words related to the self and a general other were served as unconditioned stimuli (USs) in the evaluative conditioning…

Dependent Correlations in Meta-Analysis: The Case of Heterogeneous Dependence
In meta-analysis, it is common to have dependent effect sizes, such as several effect sizes from the same sample but measured at different times. Cheung and Chan proposed the adjusted-individual and adjusted-weighted procedures to estimate the degree of dependence and incorporate this estimate in the meta-analysis. The present study extends the previous study by examining the case of heterogeneous degree of dependence. Simulation results reveal t…

Subjective Overachievement in American and Chinese College Students
Research on American students has indicated that a subjective overachiever strives to attain outstanding performance but is also chronically plagued by self-doubt. The present investigation compared Chinese college students in Hong Kong and Singapore to their Caucasian American counterparts in an attempt to examine the similarities and differences in subjective overachievement across cultures. Results supported the relevance of the subjective ach…

Graduate student judges indicated which responses to each scenario represented HI, VI, HC, or VC judgments. When the judges did no…
Individualism versus collectivism or versus authoritarianism
Although there has been progress in the definition, antecedents, and consequences of individualism and collectivism, there are some fundamental issues that need to be resolved. This study examined two such issues: the dimensionality of individualism and collectivism, and the relationship of these constructs to authoritarianism. Thirty-eight American undergraduates judged the similarity among 15 concepts that have previously been shown to be refle…

Multimethod Probes of Allocentrism and Idiocentrism
Collectivism and individualism are cultural syndromes that have some common cores. Allocentrism and idiocentrism are constructs at the individual level that correspond to collectivism and individualism respectively at the cultural level. In two studies, the first with American (from Illinois) and the second with Japanese subjects, we examined the best way to measure these common cores. We also present the recommended items in two appendices, and …
