  • Wildfires increasingly threaten oil and gas wells in the western United States with disproportionate impacts on marginalized populations

    Open Access•David J X González, Rachel Morello‐frosch et al.•ARTICLE•One Earth•2024

The western United States is home to most of the nation's oil and gas production and, increasingly, wildfires. We examined historical threats of wildfires for oil and gas wells, the extent to which wildfires are projected to threaten wells as climate change progresses, and exposure of human populations to these wells. From 1984-2019, we found that cumulatively 102,882 wells were located in wildfire burn areas, and 348,853 people were exposed (res…

  • Health Symptoms and Proximity to Active Multi-Well Unconventional Oil and Gas Development Sites in the City and County of Broomfield, Colorado

    Open Access•Meagan L Weisner, William B Allshouse et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

City and County of Broomfield (CCOB) residents reported over 500 health concerns between January 2020 and December 2021. Our objective was to determine if CCOB residents living within 1 mile of multi-well unconventional oil and gas development (UOGD) sites reported more frequent health symptoms than residents living > 2 miles away. We invited 3993 randomly selected households to participate in a health survey. We applied linear regression to test…

  • Applying the hierarchy of controls to oil and gas development

    Open Access•Nicole C Deziel, Lisa M McKenzie et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

  • Understanding Self-Rated Health and Unconventional Oil and Gas Development in Three Colorado Communities

    Adam Mayer, A Malin et al.•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 17

Domestic, onshore oil and gas production has increased substantially in the United States in the last ∼20 years, creating a range of positive and negative impacts on communities. In this paper, we add to the growing literature on unconventional oil and gas production (a.k.a., “fracking”) and well-being by evaluating the association between self-reported stress induced by local oil and gas development and subjective well-being in the form of self-…

  • Truck and Multivehicle Truck Accidents with Injuries Near Colorado Oil and Gas Operations

Open Access•Benjamin Blair, John Hughes et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Unconventional and conventional oil and gas (O&G) operations raise public health concerns, such as the potential impacts from trucking activity in communities that host these operations. In this work, we used two approaches to evaluate accidents in relation to O&G activities in the State of Colorado. First, we calculated the rate of truck accidents by computing the ratio of accident count and county population. When comparing counties with increa…

  • Is reporting “significant damage” transparent? Assessing fire and explosion risk at oil and gas operations in the United States

    Open Access•Benjamin Blair, Lisa M McKenzie et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 2

  • Potential Public Health Hazards, Exposures and Health Effects from Unconventional Natural Gas Development

    John L Adgate, Bernard D Goldstein et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Technology•2014

The rapid increase in unconventional natural gas (UNG) development in the United States during the past decade has brought wells and related infrastructure closer to population centers. This review evaluates risks to public health from chemical and nonchemical stressors associated with UNG, describes likely exposure pathways and potential health effects, and identifies major uncertainties to address with future research. The most important occupa…

  • The Use of Health Impact Assessment for a Community Undergoing Natural Gas Development

Roxana Z Witter, Lisa Mckenzie et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 32

The development of natural gas wells is rapidly increasing, yet little is known about associated exposures and potential public health consequences. We used health impact assessment (HIA) to provide decision-makers with information to promote public health at a time of rapid decision making for natural gas development. We have reported that natural gas development may expose local residents to air and water contamination, industrial noise and tra…
