  • Economic growth, public welfare and sustainability

    Paul H Templet•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1996

This paper explores the relationships between economic activity and sustainability, growth, and welfare. The issues regarding the nature of the relationships were framed by Ekins in questions which are addressed empirically across countries and the states of the US. The sustainability issue is addressed by comparing nonrenewable energy throughput, a surrogate for impacts, to the renewable energy throughput in the associated ecosystem. The effect …

  • The energy transition in international economic systems

    Paul H Templet•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1996

This study investigates the way energy is used in economic systems in countries and the US states to generate desirable outputs. An observed energy transition is characterized by low energy efficiency as a country first develops, followed by increasing efficiency as the transition is passed. Energy intensity, the energy required to generate a unit of output, is an inverse measure of efficiency and reaches a peak at the transition. Below the trans…

  • Economic scale, energy and sustainability

    Paul H Templet•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1995

This paper examines the relationship of economic scale, as reflected in a country's energy throughput, to that of renewable energy flows through the supporting ecosystem. The renewable flow is net primary productivity (NPP) and is calculated by country and grouped by income per capita levels. The use of fossil fuels first rises and then declines relative to available renewable energies as gross national product (GNP) per capita rises, suggesting …

  • A tax incentive tool for environmental management

Open Access•Stephen Farber, Robert Moreau et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•1995

    Open Access•Paul H Templet•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•1995

  • Equity and sustainability

    Paul H Templet•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•1995•Cited by: 3•References: 5

An empirical equity measure involving energy, taxes, and pollution is developed and analyzed statistically with economic, environmental, energy, and sustainability indicators. The pollution equity measure is an emissions‐to‐jobs ratio, the energy measure is the ratio of energy prices of the residential sector to the industrial sector, and the tax measure is the ratio of regressive tax revenues to progressive tax revenues. A composite equity index…
