Assessing the Italian version of the respiratory symptom experience scale (IT-RSES) in smokers and former smokers
The results support the reliability and validity of the IT-RSES, suggesting its utility for assessing respiratory symptoms in smokers, and former smoker who stopped smoking and were using e-cigarettes or HTPs. The scores of former smokers are similar to those not using these products, and lower than smokers', suggests that HTPs and e-cigarettes do not add materially to respiratory symptoms when smokers stop smoking
Measures of youth e-cigarette use
This perspective discusses how to best define “e-cigarette use” among youth in a way that is relevant to individual and human health. Commonly-used definitions of youth e-cigarette use have been adapted from measures validated for tobacco cigarette smoking among adults, but may not carry the same meaning for a different product (with a much lower risk profile and very different patterns of use) and a different population (whose use is more often …
Protocol for the “Magnitude of Cigarette Substitution After Initiation of E-Cigarettes and Its Impact on Biomarkers of Exposure and Potential Harm in Dual Users” (Magnificat) Study
Introduction: Many smokers who use e-cigarettes (ECs) to quit continue smoking alongside vaping. The impact on health among individuals who simultaneously smoke conventional cigarettes (CCs) and use ECs remains unclear. The varying patterns of dual use present differing levels of overall toxin exposure and relative risks concerning smoking-related diseases. Understanding these complexities is vital to assessing the implications for human health. …
User evaluation and feasibility test of an app designed for smoking cessation in Italian people who smoke
The application was moderately useful with good feasibility, with several suggestions for future updates that could improve its effectiveness
Occupational Exposure in the Lombardy Region (Italy) to Sars-CoV-2 Infection
Sero-epidemiological surveys are valuable attempts to estimate the circulation of SARS-CoV-2 in general or selected populations. Within this context, a prospective observational study was conducted to estimate the prevalence and persistence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in different categories of workers and factors associated with positivity, through the detection of virus-specific immunoglobulin G and M (IgG/IgM) in serum samples. Enrollees were div…
Aerial Transmission of the Sars-CoV-2 Virus through Environmental E-Cigarette Aerosols
We discuss the implications of possible contagion of COVID-19 through e-cigarette aerosol (ECA) for prevention and mitigation strategies during the current pandemic. This is a relevant issue when millions of vapers (and smokers) must remain under indoor confinement and/or share public outdoor spaces with non-users. The fact that the respiratory flow associated with vaping is visible (as opposed to other respiratory activities) clearly delineates …
Methods, Developments, and Technological Innovations for Population Surveys
This article reviews contemporary issues in survey research, connecting established methods to innovative tools and technologies like real-time sensors and computer vision. This link takes into account the idea about the “organical” nature of Big Data, which represents a challenge toward a modernization of population studies in the light of technological innovations. The adopted dominant paradigm of data gathering is web survey (computer-assisted…
Lack of Substantial Post-Cessation Weight Increase in Electronic Cigarettes Users
Minimization of post-cessation weight gain in quitters is important, but existing approaches (e.g., antismoking medications) shows only limited success. We investigated changes in body weight in smokers who quit or reduced substantially their cigarette consumption by switching to electronic cigarettes (ECs) use. Body weight and smoking/vaping history were extracted from medical records of smokers and ex-smokers to match three study groups: (1) re…
A Risk Assessment Matrix for Public Health Principles
Besides nicotine replacement therapies, a realistic alternative for smoking cessation or for smoking substitution may come from electronic cigarettes (ECs), whose popularity has been steadily growing. As for any emerging behaviour associated with exposure to inhalational agents, there is legitimate cause for concern and many health organizations and policy makers have pushed for restrictive policy measures ranging from complete bans to tight regu…
Blood Pressure Control in Smokers with Arterial Hypertension Who Switched to Electronic Cigarettes
Electronic cigarettes (ECs) are battery-operated devices designed to vaporise nicotine, which may help smokers with quitting or reducing their tobacco consumption. No data is available regarding the health effects of ECs use among smokers with arterial hypertension and whether regular use results in blood pressure (BP) changes. We investigated long-term changes in resting BP and level of BP control in hypertensive smokers who quit or reduced subs…
Quit and Smoking Reduction Rates in Vape Shop Consumers
We have found that smokers purchasing e-cigarettes from vape shops with professional advice and support can achieve high success rates
What to consider when regulating electronic cigarettes
Safety evaluation and risk assessment of electronic cigarettes as tobacco cigarette substitutes
Electronic cigarettes are a recent development in tobacco harm reduction. They are marketed as less harmful alternatives to smoking. Awareness and use of these devices has grown exponentially in recent years, with millions of people currently using them. This systematic review appraises existing laboratory and clinical research on the potential risks from electronic cigarette use, compared with the well-established devastating effects of smoking …
Estimating the Harms of Nicotine-Containing Products Using the MCDA Approach
Background: An international expert panel convened by the Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs developed a multi-criteria decision analysis model of the relative importance of different types of harm related to the use of nicotine-containing products. Method: The group defined 12 products and 14 harm criteria. Seven criteria represented harms to the user, and the other seven indicated harms to others. The group scored all the products on eac…
Effect of Smoking Abstinence and Reduction in Asthmatic Smokers Switching to Electronic Cigarettes
Electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) are marketed as safer alternatives to tobacco cigarettes and have shown to reduce their consumption. Here we report for the first time the effects of e-cigs on subjective and objective asthma parameters as well as tolerability in asthmatic smokers who quit or reduced their tobacco consumption by switching to these products. We retrospectively reviewed changes in spirometry data, airway hyper-responsiveness (AHR), as…

EffiCiency and Safety of an eLectronic cigAreTte (Eclat) as Tobacco Cigarettes Substitute
BACKGROUND: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are becoming increasingly popular with smokers worldwide. Users report buying them to help quit smoking, to reduce cigarette consumption, to relieve tobacco withdrawal symptoms, and to continue having a 'smoking' experience, but with reduced health risks. Research on e-cigarettes is urgently needed in order to ensure that the decisions of regulators, healthcare providers and consumers are based on …
Impact of an Electronic Cigarette on Smoking Reduction and Cessation in Schizophrenic Smokers
We have shown for the first time that the use of e-cigarette substantially decreased cigarette consumption without causing significant side effects in chronic schizophrenic patients who smoke not intending to quit. This was achieved without negative impacts on the symptoms of schizophrenia as assessed by SAPS and SANS symptoms scales
Effect of an electronic nicotine delivery device (e-Cigarette) on smoking reduction and cessation
