Voices from the margins
Utilizing data from over 11,000 posts and 127,000 responses on Reddit groups over a 10-year period, we employed AI-powered content analysis to examine patterns in the discussions of Reddit users who post about prison and who the model classifies as before/after incarceration across various topics. Our findings revealed significant shifts regarding personal issues. These included issues relative to users’ mental health, substance use, spirituality…
Search conversion journeys and the missed opportunity of associated keywords
We map the conversion journey (i.e., the path a costumer takes to purchase a product or service) for phones, laptops, and vehicles (i.e., cars and trucks) by analyzing a massive corpus of online searches on Bing by people in the U.S. during 2021. We show that, contrary to the idealized version of the model, the observed path of customers is often circuitous and haphazard. Nevertheless, major advertisers heavily concentrate their advertising late …
Gun purchase interest as backlash to Black Lives Matter protests
How do protests affect Americans' gun ownership decisions? Using a novel dataset of gun-related web searches in combination with geocoded protest data, we examine the effects of the 2020 Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests on Americans' interest in firearm purchase. We find a clear relationship between geographic proximity to BLM protests and firearm purchase web searches, but a null relationship between these searches and proximity to re-opening p…
The ethics of suicide research online
Suicide, one of the top causes of life lost in developed countries, is a major health problem, especially today, with the dramatic increase in mental health difficulties that was triggered during the Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Opportunely, the recent emergence of internet-based crowdsourcing platforms (e.g., Amazon’s Mechanical Turk) may accelerate research on suicide prevention, however, this type of suicide research online involves a diff…
The trajectories of online mental health information seeking
Using online search activity for earlier detection of gynaecological malignancy
Online search data appears to be different between individuals with malignant and benign gynaecological conditions, with a signal observed in advance of GP referral date. Online search data needs to be evaluated in a larger dataset to determine its value as an early disease detection tool and whether its use leads to improved clinical outcomes
Individuals’ willingness to provide geospatial global positioning system (GPS) data from their smartphone during the Covid-19 pandemic
This study aims to evaluate people’s willingness to provide their geospatial global positioning system (GPS) data from their smartphones during the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the self-determination theory, the addition of monetary incentives to encourage data provision may have an adverse effect on spontaneous donation. Therefore, we tested if a crowding-out effect exists between financial and altruistic motivations. Participants were randomized…
Intimate Partner Violence as Reflected in Internet Search Data
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major public health concern with serious consequences for victims’ physical and mental health. Despite the high prevalence of IPV, describing it and detecting people suffering from it is difficult due to its sensitive nature and stigma associated with it. Existing tools for screening and tracking IPV victims are laborious, time-consuming, expensive, and require human supervision. Search engine data has previou…
Trojan Horse
Background Men who have sex with men (MSM) increasingly use internet-based websites and geospatial apps to seek sex. Though these platforms may be useful for public health intervention, evaluations of such interventions are rare. We sought to evaluate the online behavior of young MSM of color in Philadelphia and the effectiveness of using ads to link them to DoYouPhilly.org, where users can order free condoms, lubricant, and sexually transmitted …
Analysis of a Vaping-Associated Lung Injury Outbreak through Participatory Surveillance and Archival Internet Data
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention alerted of a suspected outbreak of lung illness associated with using E-cigarette products in September 2019. At the time that the CDC published its alert little was known about the causes of the outbreak or who was at risk for it. Here we provide insights into the outbreak through analysis of passive reporting and participatory surveillance. We collected data about vaping habits and associated ad…
President Trump Stress Disorder
In the aftermath of the 2016 election, many Democrats reported significant increases in stress, depression, and anxiety. Were these increases real, or the product of expressive reporting? Using a unique data set of searches by more than 1 million Bing users before and after the election, we examine the changes in mental-health-related searches among Democrats and Republicans. We then compare these changes to shifts in searches among Spanish-speak…
The case of a mass shooting and violence-related mental illness stigma on Twitter
To determine how mental illness (MI) stigma messaging on Twitter manifests after a mass shooting, using the Fort Lauderdale Airport shooting (January 6, 2017) as a case study, we collected publicly available tweets about mental health/illness between December 23, 2016 and January 20, 2017 published
Respiratory syncytial virus tracking using internet search engine data
Our study represents the first time that RSV has been tracked using Internet data results and highlights successful use of search filters and domain adaptation techniques, using data at multiple resolutions. Our approach may assist in identifying spread of both local and more widespread RSV transmission and may be applicable to other seasonal conditions where comprehensive epidemiological data is difficult to collect or obtain

Linguistic Factors Associated With Propagation of Political Opinions in Twitter
In the last decade, social networks have emerged as a significant media platform for dissemination of political information. In this article, we characterize linguistic factors that affect the dissemination of a political message on Twitter. This is important because characterization of messages that were posted by users from both political camps can provide a unique insight into how rival audiences can be reached. We analyze about 20,000 Twitter…
Promoting Civil Discourse Through Search Engine Diversity
The ability of modern web services such as news aggregators and search engines to tailor their results to the tastes of individuals, together with people's preference for reading opinions which reinforce their own viewpoints, have raised concerns that people are nowadays exposed to a narrow range of view-points, a phenomenon referred to as the “filter bubble”. In this paper we focus on increasing exposure to varied political opinions with a goal …
