  • The News Crawler

Open Access•Asma Khanom, Damon Kiesow et al.•ARTICLE•Media and Communication•2023

In the past 20 years, Silicon Valley’s platforms and opaque algorithms have increasingly influenced civic discourse, helping Facebook, Twitter, and others extract and consolidate the revenues generated . That trend has reduced the profitability of local news organizations, but not the importance of locally created news reporting in residents’ day-to-day lives. The disruption of the economics and distribution of news has reduced, scattered, and di…

  • Community Case Study

Our findings add additional perspective to other recent studies

Merging geospatial analytics with big data approaches provides a mechanism for leveraging and maximizing uses of traditional survey data to further extant work in meaningful ways. This study examines the income inequality hypothesis, which proposes that ecological (summary-level) income inequality is harmful for population health. However, findings from extant work are inconsistent across health outcomes and levels of geography. We contribute to …

  • Identifying key variables in African American adherence to colorectal cancer screening

Open Access•Vetta L Sanders Thompson, Sean Lander et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

The findings suggest a streamlined set of issues and concerns that may be used by providers advising patients or developing colorectal cancer intervention strategies for older African Americans. The data suggest the continued importance of healthcare provider recommendation to screen. It is important that providers give a clear recommendation to screen regardless of the test ultimately selected and should advise all patients that family history a…
