  • Customer Discrimination in the Workplace

Erin Kelley, Gregory Lane et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Labor Economics•2026

Many workers are evaluated on their ability to engage with customers. We measure the impact of gender-based customer discrimination on the productivity of online sales agents in sub-Saharan Africa. Using a novel framework that randomly varies the gender of names presented to customers without changing worker behavior, we find the assignment of a female-sounding name leads to 50 percent fewer purchases. Customers also lag in responding, are less e…

  • Amplification of TruSeq ancient DNA libraries with AccuPrime Pfx

    Open Access•Andaine Seguin-Orlando, Cindi A Hoover et al.•ARTICLE•STAR Science & Technology of…•2015

Recent developments in high-throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies have enabled the reconstruction of complete genome sequence and nucleosome and methylation maps from ancient individuals. A diversity of degradation reactions affect DNA molecules after an organism dies, introducing specific nucleotide misincorporation patterns in HTS data that are typically exploited to distinguish modern contaminants and authentic DNA templates. In this study,…

  • The Joint Genome Institute's synthetic biology internal review process

Open Access•Lisa Simirenko, Miranda Harmon‐Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Responsible Innovation•2015

Serious concerns have been raised over the possible intentional use of synthetic biology approaches to engineer pathogenic organisms as well as the possible accidental environmental release of genetically engineered organisms. Scientists pursuing synthetic biology research must diligently consider issues such as these. As such, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Joint Genome Institute (JGI) has developed a Synthetic Biology Internal Review proce…

  • Sequencing and Analysis of Neanderthal Genomic DNA

Open Access•James P Noonan, Graham Coop et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2006

Our knowledge of Neanderthals is based on a limited number of remains and artifacts from which we must make inferences about their biology, behavior, and relationship to ourselves. Here, we describe the characterization of these extinct hominids from a new perspective, based on the development of a Neanderthal metagenomic library and its high-throughput sequencing and analysis. Several lines of evidence indicate that the 65,250 base pairs of homi…
