The Myth of Macho Dominance in Decision Making Within Mexican and Chicano Families
The patriarchal Hispanic family structure characterized by macho dominance in marital decision making is a myth which prevails in social science literature. This myth, which is perpetuated and disseminated through impressionistic essays, is very compatible with the "social deficit" model of Hispanic family life and culture. Our conclusion—based on an intensive analysis of four major studies on marital deci sion making within Mexican and Chicano f…
An Exploration of Multicorrelates of Ethnic Group Choice
A critical sociocultural question today is: "Under what experimental and environmental conditions do ethnic subjects select stimuli of their own group?" To assess patterns of ethnic choice, Anglo, Black, and Chicano second- and fifth-grade children were asked to relate 12 statements to ethnic cues presented in a photographic and sociometric modality. Person Perception, Self-Identity, and Ethnic Group Preference in Anglo, Black, and Chicano Preschool and Third-Grade Children
Seventy-two preschool and 68 third-grade Anglo, Black, and Chicano children were shown color photographs of young male adults from the same three ethnic groups as Ss. All children were able to discriminate between the photographs of the white and Black males, but the preschool Ss were unable to make the finer discrimination between the Anglo and Chicano photographs. All pools of Ss indicated the appropriate photograph when asked which looked most…

Tests of Temporal Perspective
This study presents correlations among nine measures of “temporal perspective.” If these measures reflect the same explanatory construct, inter-correlations should be high. This assumption appears untenable, however, since the only correlations (41 Ss) achieving significance are artifactual in nature, e.g., negative correlations between scores derived from forced-choice alternatives. Caution is indicated in generalizing from research demonstratin…
Anxiety and Temporal Perspective among Normals in a Stressful Life Situation
The present study examines relationships between specific types of speech disruption denoting anxiety (the “non-ah” ratio; Mahl, 1959) and tense usage among normal Ss as they experience a real-life stress situation. Major findings are low positive correlations between anxiety and present tense ( r = .38, p < .05) and between anxiety and present plus future tense ( r = .43, p < .05). Since statistical controls (partial correlation) indicate that t…
