The case for exocentric structure – tense and mood as functional heads
Chomskyan generative linguistics treats inflectional verbal endings as heads of the node IP, meaning that tense and mood morphemes must in some sense count as parallels to lexical heads. Finding substantial arguments for this alleged similarity is not an easy task. Taking critical stances by Haspelmath as a starting point, I agree that some tests for head status (hyperonymy, distributional equivalence, status as a valency bearer) will not apply, …
The typology of Old Norse revisited
Typologically, the Old and Middle Scandinavian languages preserve features lost in Modern Scandinavian (Danish, Norwegian and Swedish), especially zero arguments and inactive constructions. Both phenomena present difficulties for the analysis of the Old and Middle Scandinavian languages as configurational, and generative linguists often choose a reductionist strategy, claiming that at the level of deep structure, configurational structure persist…

From indexical to symbolic case in Danish – a content analysis
In late Middle Danish, case was reduced to pronominal case, but in spite of this, Middle Danish case preserved features of a system typologically different from modern Danish. Case grammaticalised semantic roles, with considerable polysemy. Along with the transitivity system, Middle Danish preserved inactive (impersonal) constructions and the polysemy of the case forms was resolved according to construction type. Such a system is indexical in the…
The Malt stone as evidence for a morphological archaism
The form fauþr ‘father’ on the Malt stone is normally understood as a carving error for faþur , but could very well be read at face value as a one-syllable form fǫðr , an archaic accusative singular. In a wider Proto-Germanic context, I propose that this form is part of an early levelling process of the kinship terms to one-syllable stem forms, an alternative paradigm co-existing with the classical hysterodynamic paradigm documented in the Gothic…
Grammar and the Intersubjectivity of Language. Focus on Epistemic Verbs
This paper argues that Jürgen Habermas' theory of universal pragmatics is valuable for semantic and text-linguistic theory. Habermas' distinctions between communicative action (Kommunikatives Handeln) and discourse (Diskurs; debate on the validity of statements) are reflected in linguistic structure, as is his distinction between the four dimensions involved in every speech, act: comprehensibility, truth, sincerity, and correctness. The primary q…
