What Are the Costs of Heat Spell Mortality in Europe’s Urban Areas up to 2050
The objective of this study is to estimate the welfare economic costs of premature cardiopulmonary disease (CPD) mortality in Europe and Asia Minor under a middle-of-the-road scenario for global warming. It projects future heat-related CPD fatalities in urban areas over the next 25 years for 317 regions of 39 countries by applying regionalized exposure-response functions for heat- and air pollution–related premature mortality. These functions are…
Air pollution inequality and its temporal trends in Nordic countries
The demand for research on air pollution inequality in Nordic countries is rising with the growing evidence of adverse health effects. We examined socio-economic and ethnic disparities in air pollution exposure from 1990 to 2016. Results revealed that exposure to PM2.5 and NO2 was generally higher in municipalities with higher income, education and immigrant populations. Disparities mostly decreased over time, benefiting almost all groups. But, o…
Modelling the coupled mercury-halogen-ozone cycle in the central Arctic during spring
Near-surface mercury and ozone depletion events occur in the lowest part of the atmosphere during Arctic spring. Mercury depletion is the first step in a process that transforms long-lived elemental mercury to more reactive forms within the Arctic that are deposited to the cryosphere, ocean, and other surfaces, which can ultimately get integrated into the Arctic food web. Depletion of both mercury and ozone occur due to the presence of reactive h…
Long-Term Residential Exposure to Particulate Matter and Its Components, Nitrogen Dioxide and Ozone—A Northern Sweden Cohort Study on Mortality
This study aims to estimate the mortality risk associated with air pollution in a Swedish cohort with relatively low exposure. Air pollution models were used to estimate annual mean concentrations of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM 2.5 ), primary emitted carbonaceous particles (BC/pOC), sea salt, chemically formed particles grouped as secondary inorganic and organic aerosols (SIA and SOA) as well as ozone (O 3 ) and nitr…
Residential Exposure to PM2.5 Components and Risk of Childhood Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in Denmark: A Nationwide Register-Based Case-Control Study
In a recent study, we observed an increased risk of childhood non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) associated with exposure to fine atmospheric particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) and black carbon (BC). In this nationwide register-based case-control study, we focus on specific components of PM 2.5 in relation to childhood NHL in Denmark (1981-2013) by identifying all incidents of childhood NHL cases in the Danish Cancer Registry ( n = 170) and four (cancer-free) …
Associations of Preconception Exposure to Air Pollution and Greenness with Offspring Asthma and Hay Fever
We investigated if greenness and air pollution exposure in parents' childhood affect offspring asthma and hay fever, and if effects were mediated through parental asthma, pregnancy greenness/pollution exposure, and offspring exposure. We analysed 1106 parents with 1949 offspring (mean age 35 and 6) from the Respiratory Health in Northern Europe, Spain and Australia (RHINESSA) generation study. Mean particulate matter (PM 2.5 and PM 10 ), nitrogen…
Is the ozone climate penalty robust in Europe
The Influence of Climate Change on Atmospheric Deposition of Mercury in the Arctic—A Model Sensitivity Study
Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant with adverse health effects on humans and wildlife. It is of special concern in the Arctic due to accumulation in the food web and exposure of the Arctic population through a rich marine diet. Climate change may alter the exposure of the Arctic population to Hg. We have investigated the effect of climate change on the atmospheric Hg transport to and deposition within the Arctic by making a sensitivity study of h…
