Exploring community connections: Neighborhood amenities and loneliness among Chinese immigrants
Very little work has investigated built environment effects on loneliness. This study examined the relationship between neighborhood amenities and changes in loneliness among immigrants. Person-level cohort data were obtained from first-generation Chinese immigrants (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; baseline October 2018 – January 2020 and follow-up 3 years later, N = 346). Loneliness was assessed using the 3-item UCLA Loneliness Scale. Amenity locati…
Ethnic Enclaves and Metabolic Syndrome in Chinese Immigrants in Philadelphia
Ethnic enclaves, neighborhoods with high ethnic concentrations, may have a protective effect on their residents' health outcomes, but studies on their associations with cardiometabolic risk in Asian communities are inconsistent. We examined whether ethnic enclave residence was associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS) in a longitudinal sample of 516 Chinese immigrant adults in Philadelphia. Participants were recruited from three types of neighbor…
Pandemic effects on social capital in residents and non-residents of Chinese immigrant enclaves in Philadelphia
The COVID-19 pandemic's effect on established Chinese ethnic enclaves, which faced socio-economic disruptions as well as anti-Asian sentiment, is unknown. We compared the pandemic's effect on social capital among residents and non-residents of Chinese ethnic enclaves in Philadelphia. Despite declines in group participation and citizenship activity (joining with others or speaking with local officials to address a neighborhood problem), the pandem…
A community-based cervical cancer education and navigation program for Korean American women
In the United States (US), rates of cervical cancer screening among Asian American women (notably Korean American women) lag far behind other populations. Thus, guided by the Health Belief Model, we developed a multi-component intervention to enhance Korean American women's knowledge and beliefs about screening and to increase screening uptake. The intervention group (N=341) received a culturally-relevant cancer education program and navigation s…

Neighborhood gentrification, wealth, and co-ethnic density associations with acculturation stressors among Chinese immigrants
Among middle-aged Chinese immigrants, acculturation stress was lower for residents in neighborhoods with higher proportion of Chinese immigrants and for residents in neighborhoods with higher wealth, whereas gentrification had no influence on acculturation stress. More work on this topic is needed with vulnerable populations such as this one, informed by local context

Acculturative Stress and Depressive Symptoms Among Chinese Immigrants: The Role of Gender and Social Support
Ethnic density, social support, and loneliness among Chinese immigrants in Philadelphia
Living in more 'ethnically dense' areas is thought to promote health, possibly by facilitating social support and a sense of belonging. Because of kin networks and cultural obligations, family relationships may be particularly important for Asian immigrants. Chinese-origin individuals are the largest group of Asian Americans and among the most highly segregated, but the psychosocial benefits of living in Chinese neighborhoods are not established.…
Mammographic Breast Density and Acculturation: Longitudinal Analysis in Chinese Immigrants
A Community-Based Randomized Trial of Hepatitis B Screening Among High-Risk Vietnamese Americans
Objectives. To evaluate the effectiveness of a community-based liver cancer prevention program on hepatitis B virus (HBV) screening among low-income, underserved Vietnamese Americans at high risk. Methods. We conducted a cluster randomized trial involving 36 Vietnamese community-based organizations and 2337 participants in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York City between 2009 and 2014. We randomly assigned 18 community-based organizations to a…
Psychosocial correlates of benefit finding in breast cancer survivors in China
Breast cancer is number one in incidence and sixth in mortality among all cancers of women in China. Prior work identified positive consequences following diagnosis and treatment, including benefit finding among breast cancer survivors from Western countries. This study evaluated psychosocial correlates of benefit finding in breast cancer survivors in China. A total of 148 participants completed measures of coping, perceived stress, depressive sy…
Work Impact and Emotional Stress Among Informal Caregivers for Older Adults
These findings suggest the need to further explore work among informal caregivers and associations with emotional stress, as well as consider work-based policy approaches, organizational and/or societal, to support informal caregivers
Acculturation and Insulin Resistance Among US Chinese Immigrant Women
These findings provide longitudinal evidence that insulin resistance increases with acculturation. However, the association was apparent only in less-educated immigrants and may be mediated by a pathway other than changes in anthropometry and diet
Acculturative Stress and Inflammation Among Chinese Immigrant Women
OBJECTIVE: Among Chinese immigrant populations, increasing duration of US residence is associated with elevated risk for various chronic diseases. Although life-style changes after migration have been extensively studied in immigrant populations, the psychosocial impact of acculturative stress on biological markers of health is less understood. Thus, the purpose of the present study is to examine associations between acculturative stress and infl…
Acculturation and Dietary Change Among Chinese Immigrant Women in the United States
Socio-economic position and lower dietary moderation among Chinese immigrant women in the USA
Objective To examine associations of education and occupation, as indicators of socio-economic position (SEP), with dietary intake and diet quality in a sample of Chinese immigrant women. Design Cross-sectional. Data collection included four days of dietary recalls and information on education and current occupation for participants and their spouses. Setting Philadelphia, PA, USA. Subjects Chinese immigrant women ( n 423) recruited from October …

Screening Mammography in Asian American Women
A recent article by Leung et al.,1 concluding that annual, population-based screening mammograms are not justified in Hong Kong, would seem to have implications for screening of Asian women in Western countries. In US Asian/Pacific Islander women aged 50 years or older, for example, 1996 breast cancer incidence and mortality rates were 126.4 and 32.7 per 100 000, respectively,2 similar to rates in Hong Kong. Following the calculations described b…
The effects of racial stressors and hostility on cardiovascular reactivity in African American and Caucasian men
The effects of racial stressors and hostility on cardiovascular reactivity in African American and Caucasian men
This study examined the effects of race-related stressors and hostility on cardiovascular reactivity in 31 African American and 31 Caucasian men. Participants viewed 3 film excerpts that depicted neutral, anger-provoking (but race-neutral), and racist situations. Participants exhibited significantly greater diastolic blood pressure reactivity to anger-provoking and racist stimuli compared with neutral stimuli. In addition, high hostility was asso…
Romance Across the Social Status Continuum: Interracial Marriage and the Ideological Asymmetry Effect
This study examined the asymmetrical relationship between attitudes toward interracial marriage and social dominance orientation across four ethnic groups in the United States. Differences in these correlations were explained with the ideological asymmetry hypothesis, a specific feature of social dominance theory, which asserts that the relationship between attitudes regarding hierarchy-maintaining social practices and antiegalitarian social valu…
