How Does Regionality Influence Meaning Structures Concerning Peatland Rewetting in Germany
This study presents an analysis of the German discourse on peatland rewetting based on a data corpus of 1,957 newspaper articles published between January 2019 and July 2023. Because of the large scope of the analysis, we used structural topic modeling (STM) to identify the regionality of discursive features and meaning structures. We divided the corpus into four discourse strands (national, northeast, northwest, south) and show that the distribu…

Levers and leverage points for pathways to sustainability
Humanity is on a deeply unsustainable trajectory. We are exceeding planetary boundaries and unlikely to meet many international sustainable development goals and global environmental targets. Until recently, there was no broadly accepted framework of interventions that could ignite the transformations needed to achieve these desired targets and goals. As a component of the IPBES Global Assessment, we conducted an iterative expert deliberation pro…

The significance of meaning. Why Ipbes needs the social sciences and humanities
The term “biodiversity” is often used to describe phenomena of nature, which can be studied without a reference to the socially constructed, evaluative, or indeed normative contexts. In our paper, we challenge this conception by focusing particularly on methodological aspects of biodiversity research. We thereby engage with the idea of interdisciplinary biodiversity research as a scientific approach directed at the recognition and management of c…

How to Concretize Research on the Coupling of Ecosystems to Human Activities? From Socioeconomic Indicators to Styles of Living and Acting
Recent ecological studies have identified human activity as a relevant dimension of current evolutionary processes. However, most of these studies rely on socioeconomic indicators that consider the impact of activities on ecosystems but have only limited informative value on the effects of concrete patterns of action. This paper focuses on the concept of style as a tool for the study of the interface between society and nature. We exemplify our t…
Suburbanisation, Mobility and the 'Good Life in the Country
It seems to be almost a law of nature that cities are expanding into their hinterlands and that networks of low density settlements are forming along transport routes. What is driving this process? Who is settling in the urban sprawl, and why? These questions are explored in the following article. In the suburbanised region to the north of Frankfurt am Main in Germany, a total of 1359 households in 67 locations were investigated with respect to t…

Seen from the perspective of modernization theory, the institutionalization of a universal and secular legal system is a characteristic feature of modern societies. However, it is evident that even in modern societies religious concepts are used for the legitimization of social order. In the context of modernization theory the author analyses social order in Korea and its transformation. In a simulaneous examination of the religious structure and…
