  • A Nietzschean tafsīr for Nazi Germany

    Open Access•Gerdien Jonker•ARTICLE•Journal of Qur'anic Studies•2024

This contribution traces the history of the German Qur'an edition published by the Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha’at-e-Islam Lahore (Lahore-Ahmadiyya) in Berlin in 1939. Maulvi Sadr-ud-Dīn, the Lahore-Ahmadiyya missionary who erected the first mosque in Berlin, fashioned the translation. To reach out to a German audience gearing up for war, he entrusted his Berlin collaborator, the philosopher Hugo Marcus, with the details of the commentary. The narrativ…

In 1923, Ahmadiyya Anjuman Ishaat ve Islam with headquarters in Lahore (hereafter: Lahore-Ahmadiyya) sent the pedagogue Maulvi Sadr-ud-Din to Berlin commissioned to erect a mosque, create a mission and enter in conversation with the Europeans. The European mission was a comprehensive answer to the challenge that the British Empire presented to Muslims. In their hometown, Lahore, Lahore-Ahmadiyya aimed at comparing religions in order to push back …

  • Turkish Mosque Archives in Industrial Towns in Southern Germany

Gerdien Jonker, Isabel Elbel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Muslims in Europe•2022•References: 2

Starting from the thesis that European mosque archives offer important sources for the history of Muslims and Islam in Europe, this contribution presents results of a pilot survey into the whereabouts of mosque archives in Germany. Focusing on five small towns in industrial zones where predominantly Turkish contract workers have settled, we asked Turkish mosque administrators, chairmen and imams how they had handled papers in the past, whether an…

  • The Dynamics of Adaptive Globalisation. Muslim Missionaries in Weimar Berlin

    Open Access•Gerdien Jonker•ARTICLE•Entangled Religions•2014•References: 2

This study scrutinizes a case of adaptive globalisation at the interface of colonized India and post-war colonial Europe. It examines Muslim missionaries who, after World War I, made missionary efforts in Germany. Originating from British India, the missionaries’ determination was firmly rooted in the Indian colonial past. They saw their mission as a further step in the process of adaptive globalisation, that is, the drive to adapt to and to reve…

  • A Laboratory of Modernity—The Ahmadiyya Mission in Inter-war Europe

Gerdien Jonker•ARTICLE•Journal of Muslims in Europe•2014•Cited by: 2

In this paper, I retrace the history of the Ahmadiyya mission in inter-war Europe as part of the globalisation narrative. Once they gained a footing, missionaries responded and adapted to local experiments with modernity as a means to simultaneously win over Europeans and to modernise Islam. The article first considers the mental map with which Ahmadiyya and other Muslim intellectuals approached Europe. It reconstructs the work of the mission org…

  • Politics of Visibility

    Open Access•Gerdien Jonker, Valérie Amiraux•BOOK•Politics of Visibility•2006

This book takes into view a large variety of Muslim actors who, in recent years, made their entry into the European public sphere. Without excluding the phenomenon of terrorists, it maps the whole field of Muslim visibility. The nine contributions present unpublished ethnographic materials that have been collected between 2003 and 2005. They track down the available space that is open to Muslims in EU member states claiming a visibility of their …

  • Islamic Knowledge Through a Woman's Lens

    Open Access•Gerdien Jonker•ARTICLE•Social Compass•2003

The author maps out female production sites of Islamic knowledge in Germany. Such sites are shaped by religious pluralism. Though women experts may differ among themselves, they are still distinct as a group from male experts, who are the sole possessors of religious authority. However, the innovative inroads that these women experts are now developing have enabled them to take up a key position between Muslim communities and the majority society

The discussion of German law is juxtaposed with discussions from within various Muslim communities that seek a place for their members as religious practitioners in German society through emerging interpretations of Islamic law

  • The knife's edge

    Gerdien Jonker•ARTICLE•Mortality•1996

This paper concerns Islamic answers to death and burial in Berlin. Alfred Schütz (1972) once described the difficulties an individual faces when approaching a foreign group in order to become accepted as one of them. According to Schütz, the ambivalence of transition necessitates pragmatic action. Religious leaders from Sunni mosque organizations as well as non-religious experts (an undertaker, a lawyer) in Berlin were asked how they handle death…
