  • Advancing Theory and Practice Concerning CO 2 e Emissions

Open Access•Andrea Thorpe, Frank Figge•ARTICLE•Business Strategy and the…•2026

Although organisations are increasingly scrutinised on their CO 2 e emissions, economic growth is frequently encouraged. Eco‐efficiency–based initiatives—‘doing more with less’—could be a solution. The problem is that many organisations (e.g., smaller enterprises without access to specialist knowledge) have difficulties in gauging the impact of their initiatives on macrolevel targets of CO 2 e reduction. Conversely, a time‐based approach, as seen…

  • The Biodiversity Moonshot

Open Access•Francesco Testa, Alberto Di Minin et al.•ARTICLE•Business Ethics, the Environment…•2026

Biodiversity has recently gained increased attention in sustainability management research. It sustains the ecosystems on which organizations depend, while simultaneously being threatened by organizational activities. By highlighting this dynamic of impact and dependence, the integration of biodiversity into management discourse offers an opportunity to foster a more holistic understanding of the business–nature relationship, grounded in a system…

  • Definitions of the circular economy

    Open Access•Frank Figge, Andrea Thorpe et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2023•Cited by: 6•References: 2

With more than 4,000 research articles in 2022 the Circular Economy is clearly a topic that meets academic interest. With resource use at an all-time, unsustainable peak it is also a topic that raises great expectations: We need the circular economy. The great hopes that we all have are further fueled by the definitions of the circular economy that we find in the literature. Put colloquially, many of these definitions depict the circular economy …

  • Value creation and the circular economy

Open Access•Frank Figge, Andrea Thorpe et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2022

By using resources more efficiently, resource users help to overcome the inherent resource scarcity on “spaceship earth.” One strategy in this context is to close resource loops and to use resources circularly. With fewer resources wasted, a more circular use of resources should also increase the efficiency of resource use and create more value. However, when resource users aim for a greater degree of efficiency, inadvertently they might contribu…

  • Making use of water

    Andrea Thorpe•ARTICLE•Journal of the African Literature…•2022•References: 8

This article engages with multivalent ways in which Sudanese-American poet Safia Elhillo employs water in her poetry. I argue that studying Elhillo’s use of water imagery and settings in her work offers valuable insights into her intertextual and metatextual poetic method, as well as her thematic concerns with identity, “race,” gender and migration. Her poems with oceanic settings resurface historical traumas associated with slavery, while other …

  • South African London

    Andrea Thorpe•BOOK•South African London•2021

To read South African writing about London is to study the development of South African literature and culture in relation to one of the most important geographical touchstones within the South African imaginary. The texts examined in South African London respond to the apartheid context, displaced to a non-South African location that is a significant site of South African exile and emigration. Travel to London afforded South African writers oppo…

    Open Access•Frank Figge, Andrea Thorpe et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 10

By using resources more circularly, individual resources users hope to contribute to a more eco-efficient and sustainable resource use. Whether resources are used sustainably is decided at the macro-level, raising the question if, as well as how, the efficient and circular use of resources at the micro-level adds up to their efficient and circular use on the macro-level. Currently, the link between the circular use of resources at micro- and macr…

  • The Nature of Organizing

    Open Access•Jason Good, Andrea Thorpe•ARTICLE•Organization & Environment•2020

Organizational and natural phenomena mutually constitute one another through time and across space. Yet the current management literature that involves both organizational and natural phenomena is piecemeal and dualistic. In being piecemeal, domains are disconnected, and in being dualistic, they tend to assume that organizations and nature are separate and opposing. This article addresses these issues by developing an analytical framework of the …

  • A Black Rather Well-Known South African Recently Arrived in London”

    Andrea Susan Thorpe, Andrea Thorpe•ARTICLE•Critical Arts•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 10

This article studies the intersections between Todd Matshikiza’s celebrity in South Africa and in Britain and the critical reception of his autobiography, Chocolates for My Wife (1961). Matshikiza’s renown as the composer of the South African jazz musical King Kong, staged in Britain in the early 1960s, contributed to the development of his only full-length literary work, while the ambivalent and frequently racist media discourse around King Kong…

  • Vulnerability and Consequential Complicity

Thorpe Thorpe, Andrea Thorpe et al.•ARTICLE•Research in African Literatures•2020•Cited by: 1

In the short stories "Devil at a Dead End" (1978) and "On Monday of Last Week" (2009), the protagonists (migrants from Lesotho to South Africa and from Nigeria to the USA, respectively) are portrayed as vulnerable in terms of race, sexual violation, and exploitation. While capturing the complex vulnerability of the African female migrant, these stories also engage with the consequential complicity that constitutes part of the subjects' response t…

  • The “Pleasure Streets” of Exile

    Open Access•Andrea Thorpe•ARTICLE•Journal of Literary Studies•2018

In this article, I aim to expand our understanding of Arthur Nortje as a poet of “exile” by exploring the dialectic between self-loathing and pleasure, as well as between engagement and isolation, which he portrays performatively through his London poetry. While critics have emphasised Nortje’s “marginality” or “liminality”, both as an “exile” and a “coloured” South African, I draw on the critical writing of Zoë Wicomb in order to extend readings…

    Andrea Thorpe•ARTICLE•Safundi•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 3

In this article, I argue that London plays a dual role in South African writing, as a “real” city at a particular moment in history, and as a textual, imaginative space. For many South African writers, London comes to stand metonymically for English culture and literature even if their attitude toward Englishness and Empire may be one of ambivalent critique. The intertexts invoked in South African representations of London forge literary solidari…
