A multi-model assessment of inequality and climate change
Climate change and inequality are critical and interrelated issues. Despite growing empirical evidence on the distributional implications of climate policies and climate risks, mainstream model-based assessments are often silent on the interplay between climate change and economic inequality. Here we fill this gap through an ensemble of eight large-scale integrated assessment models that belong to different economic paradigms and feature income h…
International Climate Justice: What the People Think
Climate change impacts increase economic inequality: Evidence from a systematic literature review
While it is widely assumed that poor countries will suffer more from climate change, and that climate change will exacerbate inequalities within countries, systematic and large-scale evidence on this issue has been limited. In this systematic literature review, we examine and synthesize the evidence from the literature. Drawing from 127 individual papers, we find robust evidence that climate change impacts indeed increase economic inequality and …
The Equity and Efficiency Trade-Off of Carbon Tax Revenue Recycling: A Re-Examination
Opposite ethical views converge under the threat of catastrophic climate change
Protecting the poor with a carbon tax and equal per capita dividend
Climate action with revenue recycling has benefits for poverty, inequality and well-being
Integrated perspective on translating biophysical to economic impacts of climate change
Climate change and population: An assessment of mortality due to health impacts
The ‘Dark Matter’ in the Search for Sustainable Growth: Energy, Innovation and the Financially Paradoxical Role of Climate Confidence
Theories of economic growth have long recognised that innovation is a key but poorly understood force — the ‘residual’ of neoclassical growth models. These models have no representation of intermediate goods, or of the factors that generate and diffuse innovations, including learning-by-doing and scale economies; they are thus unable to picture how a suite of economic and institutional changes triggers waves of long-term economic progress, which …

Equity, burden sharing and development pathways: Reframing international climate negotiations
Making or breaking climate targets: The Ampere study on staged accession scenarios for climate policy
This study explores a situation of staged accession to a global climate policy regime from the current situation of regionally fragmented and moderate climate action. The analysis is based on scenarios in which a front runner coalition – the EU or the EU and China – embarks on immediate ambitious climate action while the rest of the world makes a transition to a global climate regime between 2030 and 2050. We assume that the ensuing regime involv…
Diagnostic indicators for integrated assessment models of climate policy
Integrated assessments of how climate policy interacts with energy-economy systems can be performed by a variety of models with different functional structures. In order to provide insights into why results differ between models, this article proposes a diagnostic scheme that can be applied to a wide range of models. Diagnostics can uncover patterns of model behavior and indicate how results differ between model types. Such insights are informati…
Energy efficiency policies and the timing of action: An assessment of climate mitigation costs
CO2 emission mitigation and fossil fuel markets: Dynamic and international aspects of climate policies
This paper explores a multi-model scenario ensemble to assess the impacts of idealized and non-idealized climate change stabilization policies on fossil fuel markets. Under idealized conditions climate policies significantly reduce coal use in the short- and long-term. Reductions in oil and gas use are much smaller, particularly until 2030, but revenues decrease much more because oil and gas prices are higher than coal prices. A first deviation f…
Locked into Copenhagen pledges — Implications of short-term emission targets for the cost and feasibility of long-term climate goals
This paper provides an overview of the AMPERE modeling comparison project with focus on the implications of near-term policies for the costs and attainability of long-term climate objectives. Nine modeling teams participated in the project to explore the consequences of global emissions following the proposed policy stringency of the national pledges from the Copenhagen Accord and Cancún Agreements to 2030. Specific features compared to earlier a…
