Getting Prekindergarten Students Up and Moving: Strategies for Improving Physical Activity
As elementary schools expand to include Prekindergarten (PreK), many elementary school physical education teachers are surprised to find PreK classes on their teaching schedule. Equally, many PreK classroom teachers are recognizing the need for quality movement opportunities for their students and are searching for resources that can help all children reach recommendations for physical activity (PA). Both types of teachers may feel ill-equipped a…
Reflecting on Early Help with Migrant Families: A View from Practice
This paper describes a practitioner reflection on early help for migrant families with no recourse to public funds. We used Maclean’s ‘weather model’ to examine the positives and challenges of the work. The reflection led to positive changes in programme delivery, but also highlighted tensions between following a structured practice manual and allowing practitioner autonomy, and the friction that ‘hostile environment’ restrictions caused between …
Crossing the Border: Latino Attitudes Toward Immigration Policy
Latino Attitudes Toward Ballot Propositions That Target Immigrants
In response to an increase in undocumented immigrants in the United States, several states have proposed and passed ballot measures that are intended to target immigrants, particularly Latinos. Yet, previous research has often failed to focus on Latino viewpoints in relation to these measures and the restrictions therein. As such, I utilize the 2006 Latino National Survey to examine how different sectors of the U.S. Latino population view policie…
Congregation and social structure: An investigation into four Northern Irish memberships
The relationship between organised religion and the wider society has been of fundamental concern within the sociology of religion. The author addresses the issue in terms of how material forms of social structure relate to individual congregational memberships. Four contrasting congregations were chosen for study (Baha’i, Roman Catholic, Anglican and Independent Evangelical), all in the author’s home region of Northern Ireland. A range of interv…
Sample Size Requirements for Stable Clustering of Free Partition Sorting Data
Convergence rates of cluster analysis results are studied for six sets of partition sorting data. Hierarchical cluster analysis, fuzzy cluster analysis, k-medoids clustering and four variants of the consensus clustering method are covered. The six data sets are kinship terms, colour plates, drug data, consultancy Web site items, social groups and prenatal tests. Convergence rates depend on the number of clusters extracted, on the clustering metho…
Athletic Fatness: Forgiving Corpulence in Elite Bodies
In crafting this analysis of professional golfers John Daly and Laura Davies, we were struck by the contradictions to corporeal rationality that elite, corpulent athletes might enact through their mere presence, as well as through their public ability to compete with idealized athletic bodies. That sport and dominant beliefs about sport contribute to disciplining bodies is not a point of contention for us. It is, however, unclear where the discip…
