  • Corn ethanol in the Midwestern USA

Open Access•Karen Thome, Karen E Thome et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2021

This article analyzes the entry of corn-ethanol plants in the Midwestern USA, where the majority of corn in the USA is grown, during the second US ethanol boom. In particular, we examine whether the presence of existing ethanol plants affects ethanol plant entry decisions at the county level using discrete response panel models. There are two main channels through which existing ethanol plants may affect ethanol plant entry decisions: a competiti…

  • Tradeoffs between resistance to antimicrobials in public health and their use in agriculture

    Open Access•Guillaume Lhermie, Didier Wernli et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2019•References: 5

Antimicrobial use (AMU) in animal agriculture contributes to select resistant bacteria potentially transferred to humans directly or indirectly via the food chain, representing a public health hazard. Yet, a major difference triggering AMU in food animal production is that in addition to therapeutic cure, farmers use antimicrobials to keep their herds healthy and highly productive, while ensuring animal welfare and food safety objectives. As a so…

  • Chapter 4. Economic Considerations

Open Access•Maximilian Auffhammer, C-Y Cynthia Lin Lawell et al.•ARTICLE•Collabra•2016

In this chapter we discuss the economics of climate change. We begin with a discussion of economic considerations that are important to take into account when designing and evaluating climate policy, including cost effectiveness and efficiency. We then discuss specific policies at the state, national, and international level in light of these economic considerations. We have several recommendations for the path forward for climate policy. First, …

  • Chapter 1. Bending the Curve

    Open Access•V Ramanathan, J Allison et al.•ARTICLE•Collabra•2016

We are living in a world of over seven billion people, with annual greenhouse gas emissions of approximately 50 billion tons a year and rising steadily. If continued unabated, the world is on target to warm by about 2 °C in less than 40 years, pushing the climate to a regime unlike any that has been witnessed in the last million years. Nonetheless, we still have time to avert such a catastrophic scenario, or delay its occurrence by several decade…

  • Instability, investment, disasters, and demography

    Open Access•C-y Cynthia Lin, C-Y Cynthia Lin Lawell•ARTICLE•Population and Environment•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 32

This article examines whether natural disasters affect fertility-a topic little explored but of policy importance given relevance to policies regarding disaster insurance, foreign aid, and the environment. The identification strategy uses historic regional data to exploit natural variation within each of two countries: one European country-Italy (1820-1962), and one Asian country-Japan (1671-1965). The choice of study settings allows consideratio…
