  • Proclus on eternity and time

    Open Access•Svetlana Mesyats•ARTICLE•ΣΧΟΛΗ Ancient Philosophy and the…•2026

The starting point for Proclus's reflections on the nature of time is Plato's definition of time as “the image of eternity” (εἰκόνα αἰῶνος) in Timaeus (37 de). This definition seems aporetic to Proclus, since despite the fact that an image should be similar to its prototype, Plato focuses exclusively on the differences between time and eternity, calling the former “moving according number” and the latter immovable and “abiding in unity”. Proclus …

  • Proclus. Commentary on Plato’s “Timaeus”. Book II (Translation and Commentary)

Open Access•S P Mesyats, Svetlana Mesyats•ARTICLE•ΣΧΟΛΗ Ancient Philosophy and the…•2025

Proclus’ Commentary on Plato’s Timaeus, written around 440 A.D., is our only source of information regarding the Neoplatonic doctrine of nature. In this extensive and complex work, Proclus not only analyzes the text of the dialogue line by line, but attempts to reconstruct Plato’s “universal doctrine of nature” (hole physiologia), which considers the visible cosmos as a rational living being produced by supernatural divine hypostases – the Soul, …

  • Aristotle on the causes of sleep

    Open Access•Svetlana Mesyats•ARTICLE•ΣΧΟΛΗ Ancient Philosophy and the…•2024

For more than half a century, scholars have been debating how many causes of sleep were discussed by Aristotle in the treatise On Sleep and Wakefulness (De Somno et Vigilia). Some commentators believed that Aristotle did not offer a formal explanation of sleep, others argued that sleep has no material cause, still others do not find either effective or final cause of it. The controversy is provoked by the very course of reasoning in the treatise,…

  • Aristotle’s Metaphysics

    Open Access•S P Mesyats, Svetlana Mesyats•ARTICLE•Philosophical Anthropology•2023

The article offers a new reconstruction of Aristotle's metaphysics, showing what place metaphysics occupies in the Aristotelian system of scientific knowledge, what its subject matter is, and into what parts it naturally divides. The author discusses in detail the Aristotelian doctrine of categories; his theory of essence; the doctrine of potential and actual being; explanatory model of four causes and the doctrine of the divine Intellect, in whi…

  • Aristotle’s criticism of the “like is known by like” principle (Commentary on De anima II 5, 416b 32 – 417a 20)

    Open Access•Svetlana Mesyats•ARTICLE•ΣΧΟΛΗ Ancient Philosophy and the…•2021

One of the principles underlying Aristotle’s theory of sense perception is that the sense faculty is potentially such as the sensible object is actually. On closer examination, this statement turns out to be a modernization of the ancient rule "like is known by like", shared by most of the early Greek philosophers, including Empedocles and Plato. The paper shows that though Aristotle criticizes this principle in his treatise On the Soul, he doesn…

  • Fishes that live in the earth. Aristotle. On respiration 9, 475b 10-11

    Open Access•Svetlana Mesyats•ARTICLE•ΣΧΟΛΗ Ancient Philosophy and the…•2020

Many translators and commentators of Aristotle's treatise On respiration are puzzled by his statement at De resp. 9, 475b 10-11 that “most fishes live in the earth ... and are found by digging” (τῶν ἰχθύων οἱ πολλοὶ ζῶσιν ἐν τῇ γῇ). Indeed, this phrase seems to contradict not only common sense, but also Aristotle’s own words in the History of animals and other biological treatises, that aquatic animals, like fishes who take in water for cooling, …
