The role of immigrant caregivers in improving the welfare of elders and reducing public health costs
This paper examines the impact of paid migrant home care on elderly health outcomes in Italy. The results show that an increase in migrants’ presence reduces both the frequency and duration of hospitalisations. Specifically, a 1 percentage-point increase in the migrant-to-elderly ratio leads to a decline in long-term and rehabilitation inpatient (LRI) admissions of 118 cases per 100,000 elders, with no measurable effect on acute inpatient stays. …
Mutual Benefits of Proximity
Refugees are mainly hosted in low-income countries, where they often remain for a long time. Proximity between refugees and hosts could generate negative externalities by displacing local activities and jobs. On the other hand, it could improve the welfare of bo…
Immigrant supply of marketable child care and native fertility in Italy
The availability of child-care services has often been advocated as one of the instruments to counter the fertility decline observed in many high-income countries. In the recent past, large inflows of low-skilled migrants have substantially increased the supply of child-care services. Refugee-Host Proximity and Market Creation in Uganda
Many refugees remain for long time in host countries and to assess their impact on the welfare of local communities is essential for policy design. We focus on Uganda, a country that hosts the largest number of refugees in SSA. We analyse whether and to what extent the proximity to refugees increases the welfare and the level of economic activity of hosting-community households by generating incentives for economic exchanges. To measure the poten…
