From classrooms to digital resources: Longitudinal changes in ocean literacy and learning sources among Taiwanese high school students
This study investigated long-term development trends in ocean literacy (OL) and influencing factors among 6,061 senior high school students in Taiwan, using survey data from 2018, 2021, and 2024. Descriptive statistics revealed a clear shift toward digital knowledge sources, with the use of digitally mediated sources increasing over time, while traditional media and formal classroom instruction declined. Overall OL performance showed a marked dec…
Positive Attitudes Toward Mathematics and Big-Fish-Little-Pond Effects Among Eighth Grade Taiwanese Students
This study was to examine the big-fish-little-pond effects (BFLPE) on mathematics achievement by the students’ positive attitude toward mathematics (PATM) of Taiwanese eighth-grade students in the Trends of International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). The SLM (students like learning mathematics), SVM (students value mathematics), and SCM (students confident in mathematics) have been three critical factors of students’ PATM. The sample com…

Ocean literacy among Taiwanese and Japanese high school students
The sea surrounds both Taiwan and Japan, but they have adopted different marine education policies. This study used the ocean literacy framework published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to examine the ocean literacy of high school students in Taiwan and Japan. We also investigated the channels through which students acquired marine biology knowledge and whether parental education level and students’ attitudes toward the oc…
Factors Influencing Regular Exercise Habits of Women in Taiwan
This study employed Taiwanese women aged ≥18 years as the population and investigated their exercise habits, as well as the behavioral factors affecting such habits. In research on exercise, the relationship between exercise and sex is a crucial topic, and this relationship affects exercise promotion. Women's exercise habits are influenced by traditional gender ideology, and women have long been excluded and treated unfairly in the realm of exerc…
A scale for assessing student understandings of marine resource conservation and sustainability: Psychometric verification and the latent mean difference between genders
This study developed a scale for evaluating how well students understand marine-resource conservation and sustainability; it evaluated the scale’s psychometric properties and investigated the gender difference in the scale’s score. We recruited 929 university students in Taiwan to answer a questionnaire developed using the scale. The scale’s reliability and validity were indicated through psychometric indicators—including Cronbach’s alpha, the mu…
Depressogenic traits and depression: Are humor styles mediators
Depressogenic traits are personality dispositions that put individuals at a higher risk for developing depression. Measured by the Depressive Experience Questionnaire (DEQ), self-criticism and dependency are two personality traits that are closely related to depression. The current study explored humor styles as potential mediating factors in the relationship between depressogenic traits and depression. Study 1 : Given that the traditional Chines…
An Assessment of Factors Related to Ocean Literacy Based on Gender-Invariance Measurement
This study sought to gain a more comprehensive understanding of how the factors of parental education level and student attitude toward the ocean influence the ocean literacy of students in Taiwan after establishing measurement invariance across genders. The analyzed data were collected from self-reported questionnaires filled out by students aged 16-18 years old. The students' ocean literacy was used as the outcome variable, while parental educa…
Measuring ocean literacy of high school students: Psychometric properties of a Chinese version of the ocean literacy scale
This study established a Chinese scale for measuring high school students’ ocean literacy. This included testing its reliability, validity, and differential item functioning (DIF) with the aim of compensating for the lack of DIF tests focusing on current scales. The construct validity and reliability were verified and tested by analyzing the established scale’s items using the Rasch model, and a gender DIF test was conducted to ensure the test re…
Influence of Socioeconomic Factors, Gender and Indigenous Status on Smoking in Taiwan
The indigenous Austronesian minority of Taiwan is heavily affected by health disparities which may include suffering from a greater burden of the tobacco epidemic. While a lack of representative data has historically precluded an investigation of the differences in smoking between Taiwanese ethnicities, these data have recently become available through an annual population-based telephone survey conducted by the Health Promotion Administration, M…
Gender Differences in Recreational Sports Participation among Taiwanese Adults
This study examines the gender differences in the enjoyment of recreational sports participation among Taiwanese adults. Data were obtained using the 2007 Taiwan Social Change Survey. The questionnaire included a topical module of the International Social Survey Program regarding leisure time and sports. Results showed that male subjects were more likely to participate in recreational sports to improve their appearance and on account of their per…
Female Media Use Behavior and Agreement with Publicly Promoted Agenda-Specific Health Messages
This study set out to explore the relationship between female media use behavior and agreement with agenda-specific publicly promoted health messages. A random digit dial telephone cross-sectional survey was conducted using a nationally representative sample of female residents aged 25 and over. Respondents' agreement with health messages was measured by a six-item Health Information Scale (HIS). Data were analyzed using chi-square tests and mult…
