Breaking ground in cross-cultural research on the fear of being laughed at (gelotophobia)
The current study examines whether the fear of being laughed at (gelotophobia) can be assessed reliably and validly by means of a self-report instrument in different countries of the world. All items of the GELOPH (Ruch and Titze, GELOPH〈46〉, University of Düsseldorf, 1998; Ruch and Proyer, Swiss Journal of Psychology 67:19–27, 2008b) were translated to the local language of the collaborator (42 languages in total). In total, 22,610 participants …
Prevalence Estimates of Gambling Participation and Problem Gambling among 16–18-year-old Students in Iceland
Thought Suppression and Obsession-Compulsion
It was argued that obsession-compulsion might affect the consequences of thought suppression. A group of 35 female students who were first submitted to thought suppression and then to an expression instruction were compared with a group of 38 female students submitted twice to an expression instruction. The emotional character of a target story read by subjects was systematically varied between subjects, and obsession-compulsion was included as a…
Private Self-Consciousness
A continuing problem in measurement of anxiety and depression with self-report is lack of discriminant validity. It is argued that private self-consciousness might be expected to be related to both convergent and discriminant validity of self-reported anxiety and depression. Several self-report measures of anxiety and depression were administered to 157 female undergraduates, ages 20 to 36 years, but no evidence was found for a moderating influen…
Conception of Interpersonal Trait and Action Categories
Kim and Rosenberg (1980) have found that the evaluative dimension is the only one of three semantic differential factors that is generally present in implicit personality theories at the individual level In the present study it is argued that this might be less true for cognitive elements at levels of abstraction lower than trait terms One group of subjects rated the likelihood of co‐occurrence of trait terms, a second group rated the likelihood …
