    Eric Shouse•ARTICLE•Comedy Studies•2020•References: 4

Greg Giraldo, a Harvard Law graduate, achieved notoriety thanks to regular appearances on the popular Comedy Central roasts. The success that Kendrick Kang-Joh Jeong, MD (‘Dr. Ken’) had as a stand-up comic earned him roles as Ben Chang on the television series Community and Leslie Chow in The Hangover I, II and III. In this paper, grounded in a series of in-depth interviews with working stand-up comedians with graduate-level educations, I probe t…

  • Hell gigs

    Eric Shouse•ARTICLE•Comedy Studies•2017•References: 8

This article examines a particular genre of ‘road story’ favored by professional stand-up comics. ‘Road stories’ is a colloquial term used by comedians to describe the narratives they share with one another and sometimes others in order to pass the time, to relive an experience, or to enact the role of performer off stage. These stories represent an adaptation to a particular constraint faced by stand-up comics in their conversations with one ano…

  • Sarah is magic

    Eric Shouse, Patrice A Oppliger•ARTICLE•Comedy Studies•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Sarah Silverman is an especially significant case study for scholars interested in gender and humour because she represents a turning point in the history of women's comedy. During the stand-up comedy boom of the late 1980s, a greater number of women began performing stand-up comedy than ever before, and their performances served as a catalyst for increased scholarly attention to women's humour. By the mid-1990s, a consensus had formed amongst fe…

  • A festivus for the restivus

Eric Shouse, Bernard M Timberg et al.•ARTICLE•Humor - International Journal of…•2012

Drawing on scholars who have discussed humor's capacity to simultaneously unite and divide (Appel 1996; Mintz 1999; Meyer 2000) and on Kenneth Burke's (1969b) rhetoric of identification and division, this paper describes the rhetorical strategies Jewish-American humorists have used to respond to Christmas as a national American holiday. An examination of Jewish humor about Christmas contributes to the growing literature describing how Jewish humo…

  • Clowning Around with Ronald

    Deborah M Thomson, Eric Shouse•ARTICLE•Text and Performance Quarterly•2010•References: 2

This paper traces the metamorphosis of Ronald McDonald from a grotesque clown into a health-conscious fitness guru. I argue that Ronald has grown less grotesque and increasingly monological over time as the result of strict corporate scripting. In response, a variety of performers have applied the Situationist International cut-and-paste tactic of détournement to “reclown” Ronald, returning him to his grotesque and polyvocal clown roots. The rele…

  • Feeling, Emotion, Affect

    Open Access•Eric Shouse•ARTICLE•M/C Journal•2005

AFFECT/AFFECTION. Neither word denotes a personal feeling (sentiment in Deleuze and Guattai). L’affect (Spinoza’s affectus) is an ability to affect and be affected. It is a prepersonal intensity corresponding to the passage from one experiential state of the body to another and implying an augmentation or diminution in that body’s capacity to act. L’affection (Spinoza’s affection) is each such state considered as an encounter between the affected…
