  • Lateglacial to Holocene vegetation development in the Central Rila Mountains, Bulgaria

    Open Access•Spassimir Tonkov, Elissaveta Bozilova et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 15

The vegetation history of the Central Rila Mountains for the last 14,000 years was reconstructed by means of pollen analysis and radiocarbon chronology of a core retrieved from Lake Manastirsko-2 (2326 m). The Lateglacial landscape was dominated by open herb vegetation composed of Artemisia, Chenopodiaceae, Poaceae, and other cold-resistant herbs (14,000–11,700 cal. yr BP). Stands of Pinus, Betula, and Juniperus–Ephedra shrubland partly enlarged …

  • Variation in annual pollen accumulation rates of Fagus along a N–S transect in Europe based on pollen traps

Open Access•Irena Agnieszka Pidek, Hélèna Svobodova et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2010•Cited by: 7•References: 8

Annual pollen-accumulation rates (PAR) of Fagus (beech) obtained within the framework of the Pollen Monitoring Programme (PMP) were analyzed in pollen traps along a N–S transect from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea in different European vegetation units. The study regions are situated in the lowlands of northern Poland, the uplands of SE Poland, the Czech Krkonoše Mts, the Czech Šumava Mts, the Swiss Jura Mts, the Swiss Alps, the Bulgarian Rila M…

  • Comparing pollen spectra from modified Tauber traps and moss samples

    Open Access•Heather S Pardoe, Thomas Giesecke et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2010•Cited by: 19•References: 2

This paper compares pollen spectra derived from modified Tauber traps and moss samples from a selection of woodland types from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Georgia, Greece, Poland, Switzerland and Wales. The study examines the representation of individual taxa in the two sampling media and aims to ascertain the duration of pollen deposition captured by a moss. The latter aim was pursued through the calculation of dissimilarity indexes to assess …

  • The Holocene vegetation history of Northern Pirin Mountain, southwestern Bulgaria

    Open Access•Spassimir Tonkov, Hristina Panovska et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2002•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Pollen analysis was performed on a 343 cm long core recovered from Lake Ribno Banderishko (2190 m) on Northern Pirin Mountain (southwestern Bulgaria), supplemented by six ' 4 C AMS dates. The lower part of the sequence (343-290 cm) was deposited during the Lateglacial when mountain-steppe vegetation with Artemnisia, Poaceae, Chenopodiaceae and other herbs, and with stands of Pinus and Juniperus, dominated at high altitudes. The identification of …
