  • Problems associated with correlating calibrated radiocarbon-dated pollen diagrams with historical events

    Open Access•Lisa Dumayne, R E Stoneman et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1995•Cited by: 5•References: 4

Problems of reconciling events registered in radiocarbon-dated pollen diagrams with calendar- dated archaeological events have been encountered when interpreting pollen diagrams constructed from a number of mire sites in the Hadrianic-Antonine frontier zone of Roman Britain. Only at Fozy Moss, Northumbria, is it possible to relate a substantial clearance in the radiocarbon-dated pollen diagram to a particular event in the calendar-dated archaeolo…

  • The impact of the Romans on the environment of northern England

    Open Access•Lisa Dumayne, Keith Barber et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1994•Cited by: 4•References: 6

Pollen diagrams from three sites along Hadrian's Wall in northern England are used to assess human impact on vegetation during the later Holocene, but with particular reference to the Roman period. In the light of available archaeological evidence, the radiocarbon-dated diagrams indicate that at Walton Moss and Glasson Moss, Cumbria, a period of woodland removal began during the Iron Age, continuing and accelerating during the Roman occupation. A…
