Despite Current Challenges
This paper responds to some of the fears regarding the future of lexicography. By referring to a number of paradigm shifts in the history of lexicography, some of the innovative endeavours currently occurring in lexicography and a number of exciting future possibilities, the paper tries to show that there is hope for a bright lexicographical future. This paper maintains the division of lexicography into two components, namely dictionography and g…
The Definition, Presentation and Automatic Generation of Contextual Data in Lexicography
This paper deals with several aspects of context in lexicography. Section 1 briefly mentions some different approaches to the concept context in various fields. Section 2 puts the focus on different uses and perceptions of the concept context in lexicography, contrasting it with related concepts, such as cotext, contextualization and contextual information. A more comprehensive discussion also covers different aspects of the occurrence of the con…
Dictionaries as instruments of exclusion and inclusion
As utility tools dictionaries should convey data in an impartial way. Lexicographers should not impose either their subjective view or some prevailing ideologies on the users of the dictionary. This paper focuses on aspects of exclusion and othering in some South African dictionaries. Different types of exclusion in different types of dictionaries are shown but it is also shown how dictionaries contribute to processes of inclusion. The treatment …
Information Needs and Contextualization in the Consultation Process of Dictionaries that are Linked to e-Texts
This article focuses on various aspects regarding contextualization when e-texts are linked to integrated dictionaries. The article responds to a twofold problem statement: (1) Dictionaries linked to e-texts do not sufficiently take into account the contextualization and cotextualization of words when providing information to users. (2) The integrated dictionary may contain the items needed for contextualization and cotextualization, but the …

Expanding the data distribution structure
The transition from printed to online dictionaries demands a re-assessment of and adaptations to dictionary structures. This paper focuses on some aspects of the data distribution structure and the different search positions in dictionaries that can accommodate lexicographic data. It is shown that the traditional search positions should be increased. A dictionary as a whole can be regarded as a search region and a dictionary portal as a search do…
Herbert Ernst Wiegand 08 January 1936 – 03 January 2018
08 January 1936 – 03 January 2018 EURALEX and the international lexicographic community lost a prolific and respected colleague and friend with the passing away of Professor Herbert Ernst Wiegand on 3 January 2018. Wiegand had a longstanding relation with EURALEX. As a participant in the LEX’eter ’83 conference in Exeter that hailed the establishment of the new lexicographic association, he was one of the founding members of EURALEX. At this conf…
Information overload and data overload in lexicography
Too often online dictionaries still display too many features determined by the restrictions that applied to printed dictionaries. Data overload in dictionary articles can be regarded as one such relic from the past. However, the idea that online dictionaries have unlimited space has furthered the often uncritical inclusion of too much data. This paper discusses the general term information overload and its lexicographic counterpart data overload…
Outer features in e-dictionaries / Außentexte in Online-Wörterbüchern / Caractéristiques extérieures dans les dictionnaires en ligne
Some structures in printed dictionaries also occur in online dictionaries, some do not occur, some need to be adapted whereas new structures may be introduced in online dictionaries. This paper looks at one type of structure, known in printed dictionaries as outer texts. It is argued that the notions of a frame structure and front and back matter texts do not apply to online dictionaries. The data distribution in online dictionaries does not only…

Expanding the notion of addressing relations
This paper offers a discussion of various aspects of the notion of addressing and addressing relations in dictionaries. Reference is made to the way in which these terms are defined and used in metalexicographic literature. It is shown how the metalexicographer Herbert Ernst Wiegand has introduced these terms and how he uses them in his meticulously designed general theory of lexicography. Maintaining the approach and interpretations used by Wieg…
Contextual and Co-Textual Guidance Regarding Synonyms in General Bilingual Dictionaries
Sameness of meaning can be displayed in various ways in bilingual dictionaries. This paper focuses on the presentation and treatment of synonyms.1 A brief discussion is given of the typical venue, i.e. as target language items in the translation equivalent paradigm. This is followed by a look at some aspects of translation equivalents relevant to the inclusion and treatment of synonyms. The types of lexical items that participate in relations of …

Synonymy and synonyms in Lexicography
In this paper we work with the assumption that items giving synonyms in dictionaries are primarily of assistance in the case of text production problems. We assume furthermore that synonymy does not prevail between lexemes but rather between textual items in concrete texts. Accordingly a rich selection of synonyms in text production dictionaries will offer the possibility to select the appropriate item – but only for mother-tongue speakers. We ar…
Theoretical Lexicography and the International Journal of Lexicography

IJL is contextualised within the broader field of lexicography journals and identified as a leader in this field. Different approaches by the three editors of IJL are briefly mentioned. Reference is made to the landscape of theoretical lexicography at the time IJL was founded. Attention is given to d…

Left-expanded Article Structures in Bantu with Special Reference to isiZulu and Sepedi
The article gives a brief theoretical discussion of left-expanded microstructures. This approach is used to introduce the notion of left-expanded article structures. The latter is then described in some detail and employed as lemmatisation strategy for Bantu-language dictionaries. It will be argued, against the background of the user-perspective, that such a lemmatisation strategy has certain advantages over stem lemmatisation for conjunctively w…
