Potencial ChatGPT pri razvoju Slovarja sopomenk sodobne slovenščine
In this study, we examine how well ChatGPT-4 performs in two lexicographic tasks: (a) cleaning the list of automatically retrieved synonym candidates and assigning synonymic material to lexical senses, and (b) generating dictionary entries, including sense division, definitions, and examples, based on different input data. As a gold standard, we consider the lexicographic decisions recorded in the Digital Dictionary Database for Slovene. In the f…
A Lexicographic Practice Map of Europe
This article presents the combined results of three international surveys that were carried out in the context of the Horizon 2020 European Lexicographic Infrastructure project (ELEXIS). The aim of these surveys was to gain more insight into lexicographic practices and the needs of lexicographers in Europe. The surveys were delivered via online platforms. Based on the combined results, we sketch a map of lexicographic practices in Europe, both fo…
Covid-19 Insights and Linguistic Methods
The emergence of COVID-19 affects the world population in many ways, resulting in its own specialised discourse. In addition to providing a source of data for analysis, this discourse has also led to a rethinking of multifarious research methods. This section presents a series of articles by scholars from different parts of the world with macro- and micro-linguistic perspectives, ranging from corpus-based analysis to content analysis studies. At …
Zbornik konference Jezikovne tehnologije in digitalna humanistika
With this year's conference we are celebrating the 20th anniversary since the first conference »Language technologies« which took place in 1998 in Cankarjev dom, Ljubljana and was organized by Tomaž Erjavec, Vojko Gorjanc, Jerneja Žganec Gros and Anica Rant. The topics of the first conference were the development and application of language technologies for Slovene and directions for the future. 26 papers were presented, dealing with speech techn…
Identification and automatic extraction of good dictionary examples
Examples have always been an important part of a dictionary entry. As Rundell and Atkins (2008: 454) point out, ‘you sometimes find that an entry is almost incomprehensible without its examples.’ This argument is strengthened by the recent findings of Frankenberg-Garcia (2012, 2014) that several corpus examples can sometimes be even more useful than the definition. Selecting examples is a great challenge to lexicographers, not only because they n…
The Image of the Monolingual Dictionary Across Europe. Results of the European Survey of Dictionary use and Culture
The article presents the results of a survey on dictionary use in Europe, focusing on general monolingual dictionaries. The survey is the broadest survey of dictionary use to date, covering close to 10,000 dictionary users (and non-users) in nearly thirty countries. Our survey covers varied user groups, going beyond the students and translators who have tended to dominate such studies thus far. The survey was delivered via an online survey platfo…
Discovering Automated Lexicography
In this paper, we describe the compilation of the Slovene Lexical Database; main focus being on developing the methodology to improve the tools used for lexicographic analysis and to introduce automatic data extraction in the lexicographic process. The semi-automated approach, which was devised in the last stages of database compilation, involved extracting corpus data, i.e. grammatical relations, collocations, examples, and grammatical labels, a…
Key word analysis of discourses in Slovene speech
One of the aspects of speech that remains under-researched is the internal variety of speech, i.e. the differences and similarities between different types of speech. This paper aims to contribute to this research by making the comparison between different discourses of Slovene spontaneous speech, focusing on the use of vocabulary. The key word analysis (Scott, 1997), conducted on a million‐word corpus of spoken Slovene, was used to identify lexi…
