Structural, socio-pragmatic, and cultural aspects of teaching African languages in Poland
The 60th anniversary of the African Studies program was celebrated at the University of Warsaw in the academic year 2022/23. This is equivalent to 60 years of experience in teaching African languages to Polish students. Since every anniversary encourages reflection, we take this opportunity to summarize the challenges we faced in this endeavour. Derivation and semantic autonomy
The article focuses on the polysemy and usage patterns of the Polish lexeme głowa “head” and its diminutive główka . Based on corpus methodology and cognitive linguistics analysis, it is argued that the two lexemes are too autonomous in their meanings than predicted by their morphological relatedness. The article outlines the importance of nonverbal, sociolinguistic, and situational factors of the salutation. The objectives of the paper are to explore the feasibility of consi…

Even if one is not fluent in a foreign language, it is possible to make communication successful by applying appropriate non-verbal behaviour. I…
Evaluating a 12-Million-Word Corpus as a Source of Dictionary Data
In this paper, we aim to evaluate the 12-million-word Helsinki Corpus of Swahili as a source of dictionary data used, among others, for the creation of the lemma list for a new Swahili-Polish dictionary. We analyse the dictionary log-files in order to answer a question already asked by De Schryver et al. (2006), Koplenig et al. (2014) and Trap-Jensen (2014) about whether dictionary users actually look up frequent words. However, the issue of utmo…
