Preventing Plague in the Italian Renaissance
During the fifteenth century, measures to prevent the plague were implemented almost everywhere in Italy. One essential tool for controlling urban epidemics situation was the use of Registers of the Dead. Francesco Sforza made Milan a pioneer city, establishing one of Europe’s first daily recording systems. These Registers (1450–1801) not only tracked deaths but also provided socio-demographic and clinical information on the population. Through a…
Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy in Children
Indications for laparoscopic cholecystectomy in children seem to evolve caused by changing characteristics of the pediatric population. Patients with overweight/obesity may develop more complex GB diseases. Asymptomatic patients should be considered for surgery after observation, considering age and/or pubertal maturation when other risk factors are absent
Spatial and Temporal Analyses of the Event of Death for 1480 in Milan Using the Data Contained in the Sforza’s Registers of the Dead
Historical death registration was conducted primarily to assess the presence of plague. The Liber Mortuorum of Milan was one of Europe's first registers with many socio-demographical details. In this work, we consider 1480 to make spatial and temporal analyses of the event of death to find possible explanations about the events' distribution and the events' trend over time. The spatial analyses involved Moran's I, the LISA, and the heatmaps; the …
Thyroid Function and Metabolic Syndrome in Children and Adolescents with Neuromotor Disability
Thyroid function plays a crucial role in nervous system integrity and metabolic homeostasis. We evaluated the pattern of TSH, FT4 and FT3 release in children with neuromotor impairment (NI) in relationship with metabolic syndrome (MS). We enrolled 55 patients with NI and 30 controls. Clinical parameters, thyroid function and MS presence were recorded. Principal component analysis (PCA), cluster analysis, and logistic regression models were perfor…
A Multivariate Pattern Analysis of Metabolic Profile in Neurologically Impaired Children and Adolescents
Children and adolescents with disabilities displayed a different metabolic profile compared to controls. Metabolic syndrome (MetS), particularly glucose metabolism and IR, is a crucial point to consider in the treatment and care of this fragile pediatric population. Early detection of the interrelated variables and intervention on these modifiable risk factors for metabolic disturbances play a central role in pediatric health and life expectancy …
Modeling Provincial Covid-19 Epidemic Data Using an Adjusted Time-Dependent Sird Model
In this paper, we develop a forecasting model for the spread of COVID-19 infection at a provincial (i.e., EU NUTS-3) level in Italy by using official data from the Italian Ministry of Health integrated with data extracted from daily official press conferences of regional authorities and local newspaper websites. This data integration is needed as COVID-19 death data are not available at the NUTS-3 level from official open data channels. An adjust…
From Oncological Paradigms to Non-Communicable Disease Pandemic. The Need of Recovery Human Biology Evolution
The paradigm of the Somatic Mutation Theory (SMT) is failing, and a new paradigm is underway but not yet established. What is being challenged is a conceptual approach that involves the entire human biology and the development of chronic diseases. The behavior of breast and other solid cancers is compatible with the concept that the primary tumor is able to control its microscopic metastases, in the same way that an organ (e.g., the liver) is abl…
