Restoring Ingroup Status and Glory
This study examines whether a specific type of leader rhetoric, collective victimhood rhetoric, shapes social identity and group normative structure as ultra-distinctive and immutable. Following measures of outgroup (Muslim) vitality and ingroup existential identity-uncertainty, Indian Hindu participants ( N = 149) were randomly assigned to read either a leader narrative of ingroup collective victimhood or a pro-diversity narrative. ‘You are not Sikkimese enough’
The current study analyses the motivators and inhibitors of collective action tendency using the Social Identity Model of Collective Action (SIMCA). The study was conducted with a minority and state‐based repressed group known as the old settlers in Sikkim, India. The old settlers are a community that have been historically settled in Sikkim prior to the state's merger with India in 1975. They are racially and ethnically different from the majori…
Ideological religious nationalism
Ideological religious nationalism (IRN) is a worldview that advocates the integration of religious beliefs with national policy and laws and the religious moralization of politics. However, the psychological mechanisms, individual differences, and socio-political consequences related to IRN are unclear. Across five studies (NTotal = 1,349), we established construct validity for a novel scale assessing IRN that is adaptable across different contex…
Social identity uncertainty
The following paper establishes a measurement of social identity uncertainty. We further believe social identity uncertainty is comprised of two components: identity-uncertainty (i.e., uncertainty about one’s group identity) and membership-uncertainty (i.e., uncertainty about being a group member). Stu…
Conflict Between Ethnolinguistic Groups
Ethnolinguistic competition in India was chosen to examine how group member uncertainty affects evaluations of deviant in-group members. Participants ( N = 155) from Bengaluru completed ethnolinguistic vitality and identification measures, were primed with high/low uncertainty, heard an antinorm (linguistically close to competing out-group) or a pronorm speaker (linguistically removed from competing out-group). High ethnolinguistic identifiers wh…
