  • Mediating gendered performances: Young people negotiating embodiment in research discussions

    A Phoenix, Rob Pattman et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 12

Gender inequalities in schools have implications for life chances, emotional well-being and educational policies and practices, but are apparently resistant to change. This paper employs Judith Butler's conceptualisation of performativity in a study of young people and consumption to provide insights into gendered inequities. It argues that how the young people 'do' gender in focus groups frequently involves the discussion of young women's bodies…

  • Young People's Constructions of Self: Notes on the Use and Analysis of the Photo‐Elicitation Methods

Rosaleen Croghan, Christine Griffin et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2008•Cited by: 40•References: 6

The article examines the use of photo‐elicitation methods in an ESRC‐funded study of young consumers. Participants were asked to take photographs of consumer items that were significant to them. These were subsequently used in recorded interviews as a trigger to elicit the discussion of the relationship between consumer goods and identity. The analysis focuses on how the features of visual representation influence the versions of identity that ar…

  • Style Failure: Consumption, Identity and Social Exclusion

Rosaleen Croghan, Christine Griffin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Youth Studies•2006•Cited by: 17•References: 3

Recent studies of youth culture suggest that consumption is central to the construction of adolescent identities. Many of these studies have focused on the links between consumption, style and identity, and have concluded that style is a crucial means of sustaining and defining group boundaries. Drawing on a series of group interviews with young people from an ESRC-funded study of young consumers, we focus here on the causes and consequences of b…

  • Born to abuse? Negotiating identity within an interpretative repertoire of impairment

Open Access•Rosaleen Croghan, Dorothy Miell•ARTICLE•British Journal of Social…•1999

The focus here is on the constraints and possibilities afforded by the mediation of experience though semi‐deterministic notions of the intergenerational transmission of abuse (the ‘cycle of abuse’ theory). A discourse analytic approach is adopted to accounts in which mothers identify themselves as having been abused in childhood. This identification is seen as inviting negative assumptions and inferences, among them the assumption that childhood…

  • Strategies of Resistance: `Bad' Mothers Dispute the Evidence

    Open Access•Rosaleen Croghan, Dorothy Miell•ARTICLE•Feminism & Psychology•1998•Cited by: 11•References: 9

Previous research has focused on the ways in which women who are clients of welfare agencies are constructed by professional discourse. In contrast, the present study looks at the ways in which women who are designated as `problem mothers' take issue with these professional definitions. A discourse-analytic approach is adopted in the analysis of the strategies of accommodation and resistance employed by such women. Particular attention is paid to…

  • Blaming Our Mothers, Blaming Ourselves: Women's Accounts of Childhood Abuse and Disruption

    Open Access•Rosaleen Croghan, Dorothy Miell•ARTICLE•Feminism & Psychology•1995•References: 2

This article examines the ways in which women who have suffered childhood abuse or disruption explain the breakdown in their relationship with their parents, and the extent to which their attributions of responsibility are influenced by expectations of `normal' parenting and family life. The women `s accounts are analysed in terms of the attributions of responsibility which women make for the disruption in their relations/zips, and the factors wh…

  • First-Time Mothers' Accounts of Inequality in the Division of Labour

    Open Access•Rosaleen Croghan•ARTICLE•Feminism & Psychology•1991•Cited by: 3•References: 4

The early months of motherhood represent an acute transitional period in which mothers are thrown back upon their intimate relationships with their spouse or sexual partner. The research reported here looks at the experience of mothering for a group of mothers from both stable and disrupted backgrounds using a time-use diary and in-depth interviews. It examines the relationship between the structural and environmental factors in these women's liv…
