Opening up energy: Toward more coherent research into transitions
Provincializing energy transitions
The colonialism inside today's practices of energy transition becomes evident both from experiences of close listening to participants in grassroots struggles over extractivism and livelihood and from an engaged examination of the histories of energy and transition. In turn, greater awareness of the colonial nature of energy transition can fruitfully feed into movement-building around climate change. One key to the process is slow, respectful tra…
Resignificación de las transiciones energéticas. Algunas perspectivas latinoamericanas
Abstract: …

Carbon Markets: The Policy Reality
Uncertainty Markets and Carbon Markets: Variations on Polanyian Themes
Enormous new markets in uncertainty and in carbon have been created recently, ostensibly to enhance the cost-effectiveness of both finance and climate action. In both cases, however, creating the abstract commodity framework necessary to make sense of the notion of ‘cost-effectiveness’ has entailed losing touch with what was supposedly being costed, helping to engender systemic crisis. The new financial markets expanded credit and multiplied leve…
Climate as Investment
The climate crisis and the credit crisis have made the political issues surrounding investment and finance more critical than ever before. Proposals for 'Green New Deals' and the like - aimed at tackling both global warming and global recession - are streaming forth worldwide. Yet many such proposals are incoherent in that they overlook the need for an immediate start to a programme of phasing out both fossil fuels and purported fossil fuel subst…

Gas, waqf and Barclays Capital: A decade of resistance in southern Thailand
The struggle of villagers in the Chana district of southern Thailand to resist the construction of the Trans Thai-Malaysia gas pipeline and its various spin-off industries illustrates some of the ways in which questions of ethnic, religious and class conflict are tightly bound up with industrial development, the global financial sector and human rights abuses. While the Thai elite and international investors portray the project as `socially respo…
Marketing and making carbon dumps: Commodification, calculation and counterfactuals in climate change mitigation
The climate change crisis is an example of a familiar problem of techno-politics—the overflowing waste dump. For over 150 years, industrial societies have been transferring fossil carbon from underground deposits of coal, oil and gas, via the combustion chamber, to a more active and rapidly circulating carbon pool, or ‘dump’, in the air
Peasants, plantations, and pulp: The politics of eucalyptus in Thailand
In Thailand, as in many other tropical countries, a substantial part of the population lives on recently deforested land. Between 1961 and 1985, at least a quarter of the country's land area of half a million square kilometers was deforested and put under cultivation. Approximately one-third of all Thai farmland, and as much as 15 percent of the Thai population, are found within what are technically classified as forest reserves
