Testing musical ability
Both American and European investigators have long searched for factors that contribute to musical proficiency. The present article considers several interpretations of musical talent that were advanced by persons who were themselves skilled musicians. Especial emphasis is afforded to the approach of Raleigh M. Drake, an American, who obtained his PhD in Europe, but opposed the most widely utilized early 20 th -century American conception of musi…
Pretraining Influence on Relationship between Extent of Deprivation and Probability Learning Performance
The probability-learning performance of 16 rats at two different extents of deprivation was compared after pretraining conditions under which Ss received equal or different numbers of reinforcements from two response alternatives. Results indicated no differential performances by the groups at different drive levels or under different pretraining conditions. It was concluded that deprivation effects on probability learning appear to be minimal ev…
Comparison of Operant-Rate and Paired-Comparison Methods of Measuring Reinforcer Preferences in Monkeys
Five rhesus monkeys were tested under two methods of meassuring reinforcer preference, one a paired-comparison and the other an operant-rate technique. Most animals failed to learn the discriminations necessary for paired-comparisons but showed significant and reliable differences in preference for the commodities evaluated by the operant-rate technique. It was concluded that either method, when appropriately designed, may yield useful results
Running Activity of Weanling Rats under Food or Water Deprivation
Two groups of 10 weanling rats were placed in running wheels and terminally deprived of either food or water. No significant differences in the amounts of running between groups were observed. However, the food-deprived animals showed significantly greater weight losses and survived for a shorter period. The contention that young animals characteristically show different activity patterns as a consequence of food or water deprivation was not supp…
Extent of Deprivation and Probability Learning Performance
The probability-learning performances of 4 groups of 12 rats at different reinforcement probabilities and extents of deprivation were compared. While these probabilities yielded different performances, the several deprivations did not. It was concluded that procedural variation between this and other studies of deprivation effects on choice performance may account for the failure to demonstrate drive differences on this task
