Planning versus reality: Building ‘native’ housing estates in Lomé and Douala, late nineteenth century till 1940
This article critically compares the planning and production of 'native' housing estates in Douala and Lom up to the Second World War, for which academic interest has been minimal. Although these two cities had been inhabited by local ethnic groups for much longer, both became the object of German planning initiatives as of the late nineteenth century. Around 1910, this resulted in the introduction of public housing for African citizens as a seri…
Air‐raid shelters: Civil war heritage in Valencia city
Memorial sites are an interesting part of the wide range of Spanish Civil War heritage. The city of Valencia preserves a large number of vestiges of that time, among them, more than three hundred air‐raid shelters. In this article we consider these bomb shelters, taking into account the new circumstances relating to this heritage, starting in 2017, when new legislative and management scenarios were set in motion. The approval of the Valencian Aut…

The Spanish Civil War has left many testimonies: written sources, materials remains and, for the moment, while the witnesses still live, even oral reports. However, the value given to these sources varies depending on factors that often have little to do with scientific precision and much to do with political considerations. In line with the current debate about historic memory and the role of archaeology and heritage management in its constructi…
Iron Age Landscape and Rural Habitat in the Edetan Territory, Iberia (4th–3rd centuries BC)
This article focuses on the rural organisation and the settlement pattern of the Iberian Iron Age city of Edeta. Ongoing research into its macro-spatial organisation has revealed the existence of different functions and internal features within the settlements and their relation to a wider and more integrated space: the territory. Based on excavation and survey data, we present new questions and analytical categories in order to approach issues r…
