Economics imperialism
In responding to Heisse’s comments in this journal on our article “Today’s economics: one, no one and one hundred thousand” (2024), we clarify that we do not believe economics is already pluralistic, nor that heterodoxy is being taken seriously by the mainstream. As against Heisse’s “everything holds together” thesis, we argue that various factors—including the transformative impact of other disciplines—are bringing about changes in economics, wh…
Celebrating European law and economics
This paper analyzes the intellectual foundations and evolution of the European Journal of Law and Economics (EJLE) over its first thirty years. We first reconstruct the European intellectual traditions underlying law and economics—Enlightenment thought, the German Historical School, ordoliberalism, and comparative institutional analysis—and their role in shaping the journal’s founding mission. We then complement this historical analysis with a co…

Today’s economics
The paper employs the sense and structure of a famous novel by the Italian writer Luigi Pirandello, One, No One and One Hundred Thousand (Uno, nessuno e centomila), of 1926, to reflect upon the recent past, current status, and possible future appearance of economics. From an open/closed system perspective, the paper explores economics in relation to other social science disciplines in the epoch of economics imperialism, when it could reclaim a un…

We first review the parallelism between postwar capitalismâ€TMs core-periphery expansion of the north into the south and the Chicagoâ€TMs theory of economics imperialism. We then distinguish four forms of relationships between different disciplin…

The Economic Problem of Happiness
By stressing the substantial continuity of vision between John Maynard Keynes’s early unpublished essays and his more mature writings, the paper discusses Keynes’s ethics and focuses on his thoughts about happiness. In particular, we emphasize the anti-utilitarianism of Keynes’s vision and his belief that material wealth is but a precondition to enjoy the possibilities of a good life, and direct attention to problems of incommensurability raised …
