  • Time after Time

    Gregory Gan•ARTICLE•ARTMargins•2026

Following the Second World War, German cities would be transformed by urban planning mandates that sought to create a new East German identity through public art and architecture. Initially, these followed a Socialist Realist doctrine largely dictated by the Soviet Union. However, even as the Soviet Union softened its stance, the style of Socialist Realism persisted in the GDR, and became instrumental in shaping a unique architectural and artisti…

  • “Unsure whether it feels like home anymore”

    Open Access•Gregory Gan•ARTICLE•Ethnography•2025

In 2017, Moscow launched an urban renewal campaign proposing to tear down eight thousand panel-block apartment buildings aiming to relocate over a million and a half residents into newly built high-rises. The campaign provoked diverse reactions ranging from anger to excitement for the chance to improve living conditions. A much-circulated trope amongst post-Revolutionary refugees from Bolshevik Russia stated that upon emigration, 'Russia' became reconstituted 'outside Russia'. This narrative became central to how subsequent émigrés imagined their journeys abroad, simultaneously asserting historical continuity with other 'waves' of Russian emigration and defining their own migration trajectory in opposition to them. This research, based on contemporary ethnographi…

On 21 February 2012, a female Russian punk collective 'Pussy Riot' performed a 'Punk Prayer Against Putin' on the soleas of Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. The ensuing controversy over the performance, as well as criminal charges brought against three members of the group, made explicit the contentious nature of the place of Pussy Riot's 'punk prayer'. The author examines place in its dual identity as an event and as an actor, one affec…
