Morir morirás ‘for certain you will die’
In this article we analyze the translation strategies used by medieval and early modern Spanish translators when rendering the infinitive absolute (IA) in the Hebrew Bible. In a literal translation, this structure, which had no immediate equivalent in the Spanish of the time, would be rendered with the infinitive followed by a conjugated form of the same verb, as in Spanish llorar llorarás ‘to cry you will cry’, meaning either ‘for sure you will …

El español en contacto con otras lenguas peninsulares
Este artículo se centra en los problemas que plantea el estudio histórico de las variedades del español en las zonas bilingües de la península ibérica, un aspecto que tiende a obviarse en la bibliografía especializada. Para ello se presenta un estado de la cuestión de la diacronía del español de tres zonas -Galicia, Navarra y Mallorca- en donde se ha venido dando el contacto con gallego, vasco y catalán, respectivamente. A match made in heaven
This study applies multinomial regression analysis to a parallel corpus of Spanish medieval translations of the Bible in order to study the different factors that condition variation in the expression of possession in Old Spanish. Our methodology allows us to determine the degree to which less frequent possessive constructions (ART + POSS, as in la su casa ‘the his house’; GEN, as in la casa de él ‘the house of him’; and ART/BARE, as in la casa ‘…
Accounting for the position of verbal agreement morphology with psycholinguistic and diachronic explanatory factors
This article attempts a more complete explanation of the position of verbal agreement affixes which, unlike other inflections, lack a correlation with word order and are prefixes relatively more frequently. An analysis of the factors that determine the position of affixes during morphologization reveals that agreement inflections originate in relatively more mobile sources (unstressed pronouns) and are associated to polymorphemic hosts. This, in …
