Crime as a Job: Risk Assessment and Desistance Within Professional Narratives Roles
Studies have shown that people who commit criminalized acts draw upon different narrative roles. This study highlights the narrative role of the professional and explores how such identities and self-understandings influence risk assessment and desistance. The study is based on qualitative interviews with 54 prisoners from Argentina, Chile, Honduras, and Mexico—all convicted of theft and robbery. The language of formal work and references to deta…
Protecting Parents, Idealizing the Past, Blaming Friends: Life Stories of Men Imprisoned for Violence
Life-stories emerge from a wide variety of facts and events in individual lives and weave a selected few of these together to make meaning in the present. They are crucial for constructing identity and influence action by establishing worldviews and a persona that narrators will seek to confirm. In this study we describe three main themes in the life-stories of six incarcerated men in Argentina: a) Protecting family, especially parents; b) recons…
Family violence and runaway children in prisoner populations of Latin America
The paper aims to analyse the links between domestic violence and children abandoning their family home, using new empirical evidence from the Latin American inmate population. Interest in this group is obvious, as it is precisely because they ran away from home that many may have ended up in a criminal environment and finally, in prison. Among prison inmates, family violence is a strong predictor of abandoning the childhood home. Such inmates ha…
Cultural stigmatization and police corruption: Cannabis, gender, and legalization in Mexico
Mexico may well be the largest country in the world to legalize cannabis. Nevertheless, it is culturally conservative and a certain discrepancy exists between liberalization reforms and popular opinion regarding cannabis. Based on qualitative interviews with 100 cannabis users in Mexico City, we describe the gendered differences in perceptions and experiences of cannabis use. While the young women in the study stated that they used cannabis to de…
Stories of the “good father”: The role of fatherhood among incarcerated men in Mexico
This study examines the role of fatherhood for incarcerated men in Mexico, based on repeated life-story interviews with twelve men. We distinguish between their descriptions of fatherhood in the past and present and how they imagine the future, and explore how fathers describe their relationship with their children. The incarcerated men idealize the past with their children or tell stories of how they have changed from being “bad” to “good” fathe…
Goodbye to the golden cage: Transformations in gender norms and family morality for working‐class women in occupations considered masculine in Mexico
This article seeks to contribute to the debate, within the feminist sociological theory and gender studies, about the possibility of ‘undoing gender’ in different social fields, mainly family relations. It is based on the premise that as women's objective dependency in the social structure decreases, the unstable character of what Bourdieu called ‘submissive dispositions’ becomes visible, and that women act reflectively, both to adapt to the chal…
Of Justice and Family: The Social Impact of New Legislation against Gender Violence among Battered Women in Mexico
In Mexico, the newly adopted law against gender violence has had a symbolic impact on victims of intimate partner violence that stems from the power of the law to bring to light an experience of injustice that has been naturalized and normalized by tradition. Through a qualitative study, it was observed that the perceptions of what is fair or deserved (based on a notion of justice anchored in tradition) contrasts with the concept of law. This art…
Living Sin Papeles: Undocumented Latino Workers Negotiating Life in “Illegality
In the United States, the construction of “illegality” of undocumented Latino workers is predicated upon multiple interacting social, economic, political, and sociological factors and consignment to an inferior social status, harsh living conditions, and exploitation. These “cumulative vulnerabilities” contribute to increased stressors and poor psychological health outcomes. However, little is known about these marginalized workers’ experience of…

Drinking and working in a cantina: Misrecognition and the threat of stigma
Poor women are often compelled to accept jobs that jeopardise their health and their social reputations. Cantineras are recently immigrated Latinas employed in working-class Latino bars (cantinas) where they are hired as waitresses to earn sales commissions from beer purchased for them by male clients seeking female companionship. Narratives solicited from 31 cantineras revealed the work subculture of local cantinas, where drinking is a primary w…

The Weakness of Family Ties and Their Perpetuating Effects on Gender Violence: A Qualitative Study in Mexico
Research into intimate partner violence has shown that social isolation constitutes a risk factor, and the presence of social networks can be an important source of social support. This research note presents some results of an empirical study carried out in Mexico into women's social relations, especially their family relations, and their role in the promotion of traditional gender norms. Findings indicate that some of the main conditions that a…
