Energy-related financial literacy and bounded rationality in appliance replacement attitudes
As countries develop, they are likely to face challenges in meeting growing energy demand and in ensuring energy security. Given this, and the problem of climate change, improving demand-side energy efficiency is pivotal to ensuring sustainable development. However, agents often underinvest in energy-efficient technologies due to behavioral failures such as low levels of energy-related financial literacy, defined as the combination of energy know…
The Demand for School Meal Services by Swiss Households
In this paper we investigate the household demand for childcare during lunchtime at school using a stated preferences approach. Data are collected through phone-structured interviews to 905 residents with children in the German-speaking region of Switzerland during 2007. Poisson models with random and fixed effects are used to explore factors affecting the demand. Ordinal probit models are also considered as an alternative to count data models. T…
Economies of Scale and Scope in Postal Outlets Under Consideration of Unobserved Heterogeneity
We analyze economies of scale and scope in Swiss Post's post offices and franchised postal agencies under consideration of different underlying production technologies and unobserved factors using a latent class model. The results confirm the existence of unobserved heterogeneity and of increasing economies of scale and scope in the Swiss Post's outlet network
An Empirical Analysis of Child Care Demand in Switzerland
This paper analyzes the demand of Swiss families for child care facilities. A choice experiment is used to study the effects of the facilities' characteristics as well as socio‐economic factors on the selected child care mode. The experimental data are analyzed using a discrete choice model with multinomial logit specification. The results suggest that the demand for extra‐familial day care could be considerably higher than that observed from the…
Application of Panel Data Models in Benchmarking Analysis of the Electricity Distribution Sector
en fin d'article; Zusammenfassung am Ende des Artikels; resumen al fin del artículo. : This paper explores the application of several panel data models in measuring productive efficiency of the electricity distribution sector. Stochastic Frontier Analysis has been used to estimate the cost-efficiency of 59 distribution utilities operating over a nine-year period in Switzerland. The estimated coefficients and inefficiency scores are compared acros…
An Empirical Analysis of Cost Efficiency in Non‐profit and Public Nursing Homes
This paper examines the issue of cost‐efficiency in Switzerland's nursing homes, an issue of concern to policy makers because of the rapid growth of elderly care expenditure and the aging of the population. The fact that nursing homes in Switzerland exist in different institutional forms, private for‐profit, government and non‐profit status, raises the issue of their relative cost efficiency. A panel data of 17 public and 19 nonprofit nursing hom…
Competitive Tendering and Optimal Size in the Regional Bus Transportation Industry
When defining how to implement tendering procedures for the regional bus transportation industry, one of the main problems local authorities have to face is setting the area size to be assigned as franchised monopoly. This paper's aim is to analyse the topic by combining some empirical results and evidence from recent developments in the Italian regional bus industry. The empirical results show that the bus transportation sector is characterized …
The use of a variable cost function in the regulation of the Italian water industry
Are Municipal Electricity Distribution Utilities Natural Monopolies
The purpose of this study is to analyse the cost structure of the Swiss electricity distribution utilities in order to assess economies of scale and density and the desirability of competition in the distribution of electric power. A translog cost function was estimated using panel data for a sample of 39 municipal utilities over the period 1988–1991. The results indicate the existence of economies of density for most output levels and the existe…
