  • Influence of population mobility on electricity consumption in seven U.S. cities during the Covid-19 pandemic

    Open Access•Zhifeng Guo, J R O’Hanley et al.•ARTICLE•Utilities Policy•2024

We examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on electricity consumption in seven U.S. cities. A high-level analysis reveals that reductions in electricity consumption were mostly short-term, mainly when lockdowns were first introduced. Bayesian structural time series modeling was used to decompose electricity consumption into multiple tailored components to better understand the pandemic's impact. We find that models incorporating population mo…

  • Enhancing the ecological value of oil palm agriculture through set-asides

    Open Access•Jake Emmerson Bicknell, J R O’Hanley et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Sustainability•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Agricultural expansion is the primary driver of ecological degradation across the tropics. Set-asides—uncultivated parts of agricultural landscapes, often on steep slopes and alongside rivers—may alleviate environmental impacts but can reduce the area cultivated. Here we model an approach to configuring set-asides aimed at optimizing ecological outcomes (biodiversity, above-ground carbon storage and nutrient cycling) without reducing net cultivat…
