  • At the Forefront of Power

    Open Access•Anna Piekarska•ARTICLE•Law Culture and the Humanities•2026

The growing reliance on exceptional legal measures and the proliferation of emergency modes of governance warrant a deeper theoretical investigation into the significance of the state of emergency. Legal thinking has generally perceived emergencies through a well-established paradigm that emphasizes their temporal and reversible character. The historical record of states of emergency, however, undermines the validity of this paradigm and raises q…

  • Challenging the Rule of Law Universalism

    Open Access•Anna Piekarska•ARTICLE•Law and Critique•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 3

The primary aim of this article is to present the rule of law universalism as a relevant theoretical and socio-political issue that critical legal thought needs to contend with. In order to do so, this issue is described through a Marxist theoretical framework, which aids in identifying the consequences of this universalism. Furthermore, the Marxist theoretical framework is suggested as a countermeasure that allows for going beyond it. The rule o…

  • Imagination as Crisis

    Anna Piekarska, Jakub Krzeski•ARTICLE•Historical Materialism•2021•References: 16

Many current Marxist debates point to a crisis of imagination as a challenge to emancipatory thoughts and actions. The naturalisation of the capitalist mode of production within the production of subjectivity is among the chief reasons behind this state of affairs. This article contributes to the debate by focusing on the notion of imagination, marked by a deep ambivalence capable of both naturalising and denaturalising social relations constitut…

  • Real life results of direct acting antiviral therapy for HCV infection in HIV–HCV-coinfected patients

Anna Piekarska, Elżbieta Jabłonowska et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2020

The aim of this study was to evaluate the baseline demographics and real-life efficacy of direct acting antivirals (DAAs) in HIV–HCV-positive patients as compared to patients with HCV monoinfection. The analysis included 5690 subjects who were treated with DAAs: 5533 were HCV-positive and 157 were HIV–HCV-positive. Patients with HCV-monoinfection were older (p .05). They were, however, influenced by HCV genotype (p < .0001), stage of hepatic fibr…

  • W poszukiwaniu Globalnego Wschodu

    Open Access•Marguerite Müller, Anna Piekarska•ARTICLE•Praktyka Teoretyczna•2020•References: 30

  • The high incidence of late presenters for HIV/Aids infection in the Lodz province, Poland in the years 2009–2016

    Kamila Wójcik-Cichy, Kamila Wójcik et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2018

The present study retrospectively analyses the prevalence of late diagnosis in patients with newly-diagnosed HIV infection in Lodz, Poland from January 2009 to December 2016, and assesses the predictive factors associated with late presenters. Late presentation is defined as a diagnosis of HIV with a CD4 count<350 cells/μL, or the occurrence of an AIDS- defining event, regardless of the CD4 cell count. Two hundred and fifty-nine (62.86%) patients…

  • Autonomia oporu – Marks, Spinoza i akumulacja pierwotna

    Open Access•Jakub Krzeski, Anna Piekarska•ARTICLE•Praktyka Teoretyczna•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 9

This article is an attempt at a simultaneous reading of Marx and Spinoza. We venture to show that the immanentistic ontology and the political anthropology of the latter enriches the critique of capitalism with a better understanding of a subjectivity’s function in the process of creating dominance. At the same time we view this process as incomplete. This view is enabled by the use of Spinoza's concept of imagination, which is crucial to our end…

  • Ludowe państwo dobrobytu

    Open Access•Anna Piekarska•ARTICLE•Praktyka Teoretyczna•2015•References: 2

The article is an attempt to reconstruct the transformation of poor laws in precapitalist England based on Lorie Charlesworth’s work Welfare’s Forgotten Past. The substantial contexts of this reconstruction are the history of enclosures and commons as well as the concept of so-called primitive accumulation, originating from Karl Marx. The major scope of interest is the conjunction of the loss of the poor’s subjective rights and the penalization o…
